I am thinking about getting a cold air intake system for my 2011 Silverado 5.3...I am looking at the K&N but know there are several models out there and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or preferences on brands..

Get one that does true cold air, inside the engine bay is far from cold. Look at some gm truck forums and it will be pretty obvious what everyone runs.

Besides sounding cool they do absolutely nothing yet I get one for every vehicle I have ever had smile

I did too, only thing you gain is throttle response and some noise.

Seems like if they were magic, the manufacturers would install them up front (aside from the noise factor)

I had an AirRaid on my 04 Silverado. Never had any problems even not cleaning it at often as j should've.

K&n on my 03 silverado. Didn't have any problems with it but I switched to spectre and gained 2mpg and seemed to get a little more horsepower.

K&N on my 2010 Tundra gained about 2mpg and seemed to get a little more horsepower. ...

A motor is just like a air pump, if you get a cold air intake that actually increases the air flow in you have to get an adequate exhaust system that is larger to flow that amount of air out. If not the only true difference is the sound, in my opinion.

I have a K&N system on my 01 Ram and I gained about 1 or 2 mpg and a little hp. I just redid the exhaust so I should see a little better gain now. I would say make sure it is up front so it is getting the coldest air it can while still being under the hood. I would look into building your own. It isn't to difficult to do.

I have a Volant on my Tundra and it's a waste of money. Most vehicle manufactures intake systems are just as effective as a after market intakes.

Thanks' for the info...I figured it might be a 50/50 decision..I was just hoping for a little more power/torque while pulling the boat.

You should do.some research on "cold air" and the difference it makes in power and fuel usage versus "warm air" from under the hood. There is research that shows "cold" air actually hurts fuel efficiency. A K&N or AFE filter alone will do just as Mich good.in most cases

Please show me the research that says cold air hurts fuel efficiency.

First article that pops up. The science is sound and is on about every type of website out there about fuel mileage.

There were numerous responses to the question from so-called experts that went both ways...

Regaurdless if it helps, I couldnt keep my foot out of it so it hurt my mileage. My dad had a mid 90's f150 with a 302 in it. As soon as I turned 16 I ordered ak&n for it. It made a huge difference in top end power bc that motor was starved for air in the upper rpms. Just remember no more air can get in the motor than what can go thru the throttle body.
