You should call her tonight. I used to call my kids teachers at home with questions or problems, most didn't mind , a few did. Don't sent crap home that a elementary or jr high kid and both parents can't figure out if ya don't want the phone to ring.

For what it's worth, I showed this problem to one of my deep thinking, Tool & Die co-workers. He came up with the same numbers I did in less than 3 min. I told him he passed to second grade.

Here is the explanation I was given. Now after we sat down and pulled up the assignment the teacher told me that this was an supplemental assignment that she uses. She agreed that it was probably a typo. The way the correct answer is derived is too complex for a 1st grader without more instruction or explanation.
Now here goes what we came up with. The answer key said this:
16 19 21 24 27 30 33 36
The first two numbers are to establish the pattern of +3. The rest of the numbers are actually the problem. So the first two numbers could actually been 1 and 4, or 8 and 11, or whatever. 16 and 19 was a poor choice of numbers. She believes it was a typo. Based on the level of a first graders thought process, it should have been as follows:
15 18 21 __ 27 30 __ 36
Or even this would have been a better form.
__ 16 19
21 __ 24
30 __ 36
Overall something was not right with the problem. She was going to see if she could find out if the creator of the program knew of the error. Thanks for everyone's help.

I did too. The sad thing was, as in depth as I went trying to figure it out, I was sort of relieved at the outcome. Maybe I'm not a bumbling ass idiot after all.
