Don't post much...but I sure like this group of Aldeer. I work for a company who locates pipe, among other things.... that is considered an unlocateable pipe with no tracer wire or tracer tape. For those who may not know...you need tracer wire or tracer tape that is supposed to be laid with the pipe when put in the ground with companies who transport gas, water, etc. Today out in West Texas I put this beast of a locator on the ground that does not have soil restrictions...and located their pipe no hook-up or insertion. Hookup or insertion energizes the line for a traditional locator to locate the pipe and very common in practice. When there is no hook or ability to energize the line it makes things very difficult and costly. Amazing results...located a 12" Poly and a 2" Cast Iron line. Depth 4' and 12'. Once finished the guys said what did you say the technology was....I said ole Alabama Acoustics....similar to what the US Navy uses but on a smaller scale. One of the old school boys said I never would of thought someone in Alabama would bring this type technology to us, and I said Kinda like Bama and Auburn with Football right ?? No worries we got your back like your got ours right ? We will be getting a purchase order for 10 units and they are not cheap by no means. Good day in Texas and they did embrace the technology.

Alabama needs to do a better job of promoting Huntsville as a NASA technology center.

I've been in telecom construction all my adult life and I know how important that accurate locating is. To locate something at 12 feet is amazing.

Locating Poly pipe with no tracer is impressive. I don't know why anyone would run a water line from the meter to the house without a tracer wire. When a water leak occurs, the water maybe coming out of the ground nowhere near the pipe.

Why would you need tracer wire in a fiber conduit?

We sometimes need the same thing. Old manholes have become covered with grass/weeds and if we can't locath the path it hard to find a random manhole.

What part of West Texas you working in, the Midland/Odessa area? Have you had the pleasure of experiencing one of those famous West Texas dust storms?

I worked between Big Spring and Midland in 1978. We were trenching cable in the caliche. Some of that stuff was hard as granite. You could damn near set your watch by the afternoon dust storms. The place I had rented would have dust blown in after every storm. And the dang sulphur water/stinky air....glad I got out of there.

It needs to be a big ole pipe or really shallow to work. It won't read depth and gets confused with too many ducts.

Fiber is non conductive. We had the metallic tape outside the conduit but it has disintegrated long ago.

That's the West Texas I know and loved. Lived in Lubbock for the first 40 years of my life.

I was in Midland/Odessa and have been out several times. Nothing like seeing tumbleweed blowing across the interstate.
