You started this post over 10 days ago and never chimed in. Did you get your answer?

How big is the bullseye? And can you get the correct distance analyzed?

I'd say your max range is not a static thing, it can change in a second in the hunting woods.....

Take into consideration....

1. your ability on the range
2. your actual experience in SHOOTING live deer
3. deers attitude....alert, asleep, eating????
4. weather...still, windy, raining????
5. distance to deer....
6. cover for you, limbs, trees, grass???
7. deer standing, laying down, walking, running???

Rainy windy day, little KILLING experience, deer very alert at 25 yards......oughta hold off...

I killed a huge seven year old 225# seven point at 49 yards onct. I had killed a LOT of deer then. I practiced at 50 yards near every day. I used a rangefinder. Buck was laying down slight quartering...with a HOT doe. I think he had his eyes closed. He wasn't moving. No wind. Hit him twice two inches apart..he never got up.

gotta be able to read em...

40 yards in any condition would be it for me. I love practicing 60 yards and beyond but don't think I could be affective over 40 yards or just haven't grown to that distance as an archer. I don't think anyone can tell you what your range would be. It takes countless hours of practice in lots of conditions for you to know. Mentally, you better be prepared. I have found you can sike yourself out of a shot that under a no pressure situation you would make and hit no problem. Obviously a live animal and a backyard target don't act the same. lol

Other things being equal, it is the man who shoots with his heart in his bow that hits the mark.

Had a big 9 point at 18 yards on the edge of a cut corn field last fall in Illinois. He busted me at mid draw and started to trot away into the field. I finished drawing my bow and stopped him at what I believed to be about 35 yards. He was quartering away and looking back at me. I got on him and took the shot (stupidly). He ducked and turned at the same time and I watched my arrow sail right past him. Clean miss. He ran across the field and stopped 80 yards away and stared me down for about 5 minutes. I was shaking like a leaf the whole time. Bottom line...it was the largest buck I'd ever had an opportunity to shoot. I learned a valuable lesson that day and was darn lucky I didn't wound that deer. I'll never make that mistake again. Another buddy in my hunting party got a crack at him 2 days later and missed him at 35 yards. Hopefully I'll see him again this November!

Agreed on stand placement, REEFD...but if someone stalk hunts...they will often see (unaware/relaxed) deer browsing at 50 yards and more. I like to practice shooting at 60 yards maximum for this reason. Twenty to thirty yard shots seem easier after a dozen 60 yard shots. Maybe a little of both is optimal.

30 yards for me on a deer. I have taken a longer shot than that, but, I hope I never do again. I stupidly took a 45 yard shot at a nice buck a coupe of years ago, skipped the arrow off his back. Never saw him around that area again. Should have waited for a better shot.

30 yards, at one point it was 40 yards when I had the time and opportunity to shoot alot. I have taken on deer at 32 yards (the longest I have shot at deer). I prefer deer inside 20 yards and relaxed!
