Think of it this way, sound travels over 1000ft per second. My Buck Commander Cross Bow will scoot an arrow 365ft per second. So the further you are from the deer the more likely he will here the sound of your bow and duck to jump causing you to shoot over him. Therefore the closer you are the less likely the sound will reach his ears before the arrow hits his heart. My opinion with a fast bow and noisy woods 40 yards max, 25 yards ideal.

Give thanks for our military men and women. Because of their dedication and sacrifice, you and I are able to enjoy the frredoms we have today in America. God Blesss the USA.

BIG-AL wants to fire Alabama's offensive coordinator because Alabama sucks so bad, so that eliminates whatever credibility he has on judgement calls.

Broadside is great. So is quartering away.

30 yds max. never shot further than that at a deer. I prsctice out to 50 butwould never risk injuring one, anything over 30 id unethical.

25 yds for me. I want a passthru or maximum penetration. I don't want a wounded animal running around with an arrow hanging out.
Poor penetration on a bad shot could allow an animal to leave the range where I could legally track it too.

15 to 60 yards for me.i have killed them right under me but dont like the shot angle so i now let them go by and shoot them going away if possible.dont usually have a shot farther than 30 in the woods but its a different story in alot of this pasture land i hunt.

30 yards for me no matter how much I practice, the idea is to get them as close as I possibly can! Preferred range 6 to 15 yards!

I love to shoot long range. My last pin is set at 85. I don't hunt at that range but I do hunt farms in SW KY so my range goes farther there than here at home.

It's funny when my son watches hunting shows with me. He will laugh at people on tv because they brag about a 40 or 50 yard shot. smile

he laughs because 1. 40 yards is a chip shot?
2. 50 yards is way too far?

He laughs because both are chip shots for his dad on our little 3-D range. I'm still his hero and he thinks there is a big S on my T-shirt. He doesn't realize they are shooting in an uncontrolled environment but he does see the poor shots they make and the way practice pays off for me.

If your worried about shooting a deer at 50 yards you may as well take a rifle, for your sake and the deer's. Getting super close to the animal is the real thrill with bow hunting, and once you kill a deer that is so close you can hear it chewing it wont even seem like a challenge using a "modern weapon" anymore. Ive only been bow hunting for 4 years (killed 11 deer only one being a buck and a 2.5 year old at that) and since i started Ive only taken a rifle to the stand with me three times or when hunting with my fiance. I have never attempeted a shot over 30 yards most have been 20 or less.

I practice out to a hundred yards. With a big bodied deer i would go 40yds probably. I have only lost one deer with a bow. A doe at 41yds.

That deer heard and was in motion reacting to the shot. She jumped back and i caught her across the front. Til that experience i honestly never had an appreciation for how fast they can react to noise.

The other deer i have killed were between 17 and 32yds.

30 yards... when are you realistically going to get a shot over that in the woods? If you can then you aint huntin in the right spots for big daddy.
