God designed marriage to be a life time covenant commitment that shall not be broken. It reflects God and his covenant with us as believers, lasting eternally. God makes one exception...marital unfaithfulness. Why? Because the marriage bed is the ultimate intimacy...two become one literally and marriage is also the foundation of the family unit. Likewise if we are unfaithful to God and turn away from him...rejecting his love and spiritual intimacy...God may see fit to turn us over to our wickedness and we are then separated from him.

Divorce is serious. As believers divorce should only be sought for adultery. Sadly the Christian divorce rate is about the same as non Christians. Which shows that far too many don't take the covenant as seriously as God intended.

Letter of the law vs. spirit of the law. God wants us to fulfill the obligations of our marriage, but if one spouse violates the marriage contract and the marriage ends, I doubt He faults the one who tried to do the right thing. I know many divorced and remarried people who are no doubt blessed by God.

As long as he is committed to the marriage and acts that way, then I'm hoping God recognizes that. Great question.

If grace isn't sufficient and you must continually ask forgiveness for every single sin, what happens if you forget one? Does Jesus only save those with perfect memory? What happens if you think a carnal thought and then get run over by a truck? Does Jesus only save those sinners lucky enough to avoid untimely tragedy?

I know we are derailing the thread but it needs derailing in my opinion.

I believe that my friend that I described in the story above is indeed blessed and I fully expect to see him in heaven when I go ...

Grace is sufficient. Your faith must be in Jesus and the price he paid. You can't rely on your own ability, even your ability to repent.

At the same time, you aren't just OK with God for all time because you prayed a prayer once in church years ago. You must be born again.

A born again man may sin but he wants to be free from sin. There is a big difference between a man who wants his sin to be ok with God, and a man who still sins but really wants to be free from it. You have to be willing for that old man of sin to die, even if it takes a while to kill him after praying a sinners prayer. That's what Paul was saying when he said he crucified himself daily.

Salvation is a condition of the heart. It doesn't matter if it takes time to die to self after asking for salvation. What matters is the willingness to do so in the heart when you ask for salvation.

John 8

New King James Version (NKJV)

1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them.

3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst,

4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.

5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?”

6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”

8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”

11 She said, “No one, Lord.”

And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Jesus is so freakin awesome!!!

1 Corinthians 7:10-11 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Those passages pretty much sum up my opinion on the subject.

Let me briefly tell you his story and then you can tell me your thoughts on the matter :

He married a girl when he was young and was faithful to her in every way. After about a year she fell out of love with him and ran off with another man. He tried to convince her to come back but she wouldn't hear of it and she went on her way.

Ten years later he falls in love with another woman and marries her. He was faithful to her completely also. Early on in the marriage she has an affair with his lifelong best friend. He convinces her to come back and to go to counseling. It took him a few years but he forgave her and life went on. Years later she does the same thing again with the same man only this tIme she leaves and divorces him. He tried to convince her otherwise to no avail.

Several years later he meets another woman who had been through an almost identical set of circumstances and she becomes his 3rd wife. They have been married for a long time now and they are committed and dedicated to each other. I mean you should see them together, they are perfect for each other and very much in love to this day.

So, both he and her are on their third marriage. Both of them were completely faithful to their first two spouses. Both of them did everything they could to save their failed marriages.

Are they sinning?

God works in mysterious ways. This thread has been resurrected for a purpose. I have a situation on my heart that I really need some advice about. I know of a church that has a person in a leadership position that just divorced. Nobody knew about this until it was done. No counseling with anyone in the church was had. The spouse suffered a serious health problem a couple of years ago and is disabled and in a nursing home. In my opinion, this person shouldn't continue in a leadership position. What do you say? I really need some Godly advice.

Those are certainly the moral commandments/law on the subject. But as with all sin(s) the blood of Christ covers all. If the sinner has received, believed, etc.

Let me put it simple for you. Jesus died on the cross to wash away our sins. Whomever believes and asks Jesus into their heart is saved. Confess your sins and God will forgive.

Touchy situation there. In my opinion, a man that is divorced should not serve in a leadership position of a church. I don't believe a divorce will keep you out of heaven either.

I believe I'd be more concerned about a church leader not seeking the wisdom and advice and prayers of his fellow church leaders and elders first, and then about whether divorce is or should be an issue. Isn't the church supposed to be the Body of Christ, supportive, wise and able to at least be leaned upon in times of trouble? Yet this church leader didn't do that.

As for divorcing because of a disabled spouse living in a nursing home, I don't have any respect for someone who does that and think it's pretty low-class. Guess he must have glossed over that "sickness and in health, 'til death do us part" portion of the vows he took before God.
