My son is a junior in Hoover and we are looking for options on taking a welding class this summer. Who do you guys recommend as a good place to learn from?

My dad was one of the best.He was a welder and overhead crane operator for CBI in Birmingham and I could never understand why he wouldn't teach me to weld.It is something I have always wanted to learn.I am so limited at what I can do around here because I don't know how to.I plan on taking welding classes up here at the Marshall county vocational school this year.Good luck to your son and tell him to stick with it.

God Bless, David B. yep welding on pre heated metal, up to 300 degrees, brutal in the summer, still bad in the winter.

My uncle is a metalurgical engineer. He is a walking brain, he didnt want his son to be a welder either but is a traveling welder for some big outfit.
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

Had a young friend (26 yrs old) who learned the trade and started his own company in Alabama. He traveled and did various jobs, and after finishing up his last job in Louisiana last year, the company he contracted with told him to sell his business and tools, and they hired him. A great trade to learn if not for just fixing stuff around the farm or wherever.

I am pretty sure that Shelton State in Tuscaloosa has welding classes.

Lawson State (used to be Bessemer Tech) on the Bessemer Super Highway used to have a really good welding class. Not sure if they have it anymore but did years ago. My dad used to teach it part time in the evening and I competed in a welding competion in my senior year of HS there!

How far are you from Childersburg? They have a Welding program as part of the Vocational school at Central Alabama Community College. Johnny Jones heads up the program there and is a good guy. You can go to their website and see the outline of the required course work in their current catalog. If you're in Hoover, it might be worth a ride down. In 3 or 4 hours you can see the shop and meet Johnny. I don't know Johnny from school. We had daughters that played softball together.

Yes, take a class. When the class is over, buy the boy a welder and get some scrap metal. I'll give you some. A class will help with the fundamentals, but nothing will replace practice. I'd buy an AC/DC lincoln welder. He can practice "stick" welding and you can also TIG weld with it.

When I welded, we hired a guy that went to the virginia college welding program. They taught him how to weld and he was toting a bunch of certifications but the forgot to teach him one critical aspect, fabrication. The guy honestly couldn't have built a birdhouse. Needless to say he didn't last long. The welding is the easy part but fabrication and his abilities in it will be what sets himself apart from other employees when it comes time for raises and layoffs

I learned to weld at CBI in the early 80s and those guys were absolutely amazing how good they were. Your Dad probably didn't want you to do it because most of those guys didn't live much past 60. I don't know if things are different now but they breated in a lot of smoke and soot.

I was involved in welding and welder training for more than 40 years. served on several national committees including the Tech. committee for the national tech school competition. Point being I have a list of training materials that I would be glad to email you. many show free clips of what you should see as a welder...most important .

Do they not offer it in the Ag shop at school? That's where I learned to weld. I can build one heck of a metal bird house
