Been practicing for a couple of weeks and have already seen half the kids with high dolla bats. I know most of these parents can't afford what these things cost and it kind of takes some of the fun out it knowing they plopped down a weeks pay for their kid to have one.

Technology man. Combine that with the social pressure and trying to keep up with the Jones'. I can attest to the difference composite bats mean to softball. I assume the same can be said for baseball. Who wants their kid to be left behind due to inferior equipment? No one, that's why they make so much dang money. I'm an advocate for wooden bats at all levels. It would encourage better hitting and defensive skills, IMO.

I would not spend big bucks until they were in 8th grade or so. They outgrow them quickly. If a kid is a natural hitter he will hit just fine with a regular bat IMO.

The guy who runs the batting cage at Lagoon pointed out the problem with youth sports today: the parent's competitiveness is ruining it for the kids. I agree. I recall umpiring games where parent's got out of control had to be dealt with to the cost of the kid's experience.

Most kids are brought up to expect a $300 bat, a $600 smart phone & a $45,000 truck when they turn 16. I don't know how I made it with a $15 bat, a cb radio & a 67' Chevy stepside.

Last year their was a kid on my sons team that used one until they found out they can use them in games. He could put it in outfield with the bb. Put a regular bat in his hand it would roll to the outfield. The bb has alot bigger sweet spot. My son started off with a composite bat. Had to get a new one after he made solid contact on a 40' night. He cracked the bat and he ain't a real big boy. Found out its not uncommon

A racquetball crammed in a cheap aluminum bat works way better than all the composites!

The thrifty parents buy last year's "hot bat" from Direct Sports for 1/2 the price. I used to tell my players/parents that a top notch bat ain't worth $5 in the hands of a kid who can't hit. Learning to be a contact hitter is much more important. Ain't much more impressive than a kid you can't strike out.

Shes got a Demarini CF5 thats a very hot bat..I cringe every hit cause i know its getting ready to bust and these newer CF7's arent as good as the 5's..We'll be in Trussville this weekend playing a tourney..Lunch is on you.

I'm a fastpitch travel ball coach for a 8u team. If we don't try to keep up with the Jones's there is no way we could compete. In other words it makes a very big difference in the bat. It's not uncommon to see a 8 year old girl send one over the fence.
It is hard to kill or catch anything sitting on the couch!

A racquetball crammed in a cheap aluminum bat works way better than all the composites! In the 70's and 80's so did tennis balls. It was the bat everybody used until one game the end cap came off and out shot the tennis balls. Talking about a pitcher wiggin out when those balls went by. It was all laughs until the batter got called out.

I will not spend $120 for a pair of shoes for her or buy her a dress of $100 but I did drop $250 for a new bat this year. She is a freshman that's a slapper. I feel the money is well spent on sports equipment.
Guys I don't think there will be any tourneys this weekend. Our fields are in ok shape but 12 hours with snow and rain on them are not going to help.
It's not a Passion, it's an Obsession. That's what I tell my wife, but she promptly informs it's a disease to which is incurable.
