Planning on hitting the Sipsey March feral hog hunt. Originally planned on using a 308. But, my 308 semi auto is heavy and clumsy, and the bolt action is a little slow on the follow up shots. I'll be covering a lot of ground. Ideally, I'd like to take my 30-30 lever action. From previous Sipsey trips, the shots would probably be 100 yards or less. The "google webs" seems to think 30-30 is right on the edge of being a hog round. So, I wanted to know if you guys had any experience with those expensive "hog ammo" and would it actually help in the 30-30? Maybe you've got a different suggested ammo for the 30-30? Or just stick to the 308? I also have a 12 guage slug gun, but its heavy and clumsy too. Again, I'd prefer the 30-30, but is it a reasonable choice and what ammo?

the 30/30 will kill any hog that ever walked the earth, 150 or 170 gr Rem Coreloks will do it, I'd use the 170's
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

the 30/30 will kill any hog that ever walked the earth, 150 or 170 gr Rem Coreloks will do it, I'd use the 170's Excellent, thank you for the reply.

Just how is a gun clumsy? The "clumsy" guns are long, tall, and heavy. A lot of the weight is out front. It makes them difficult to handle and navigate through thick brush. They snag on brush and are harder to hold up over the brush as you push through. The 30-30 is the opposite, they are shorter and lighter, and fairly easy to hold with one hand and use your other hand to push through thick brush.

Its a huge area and the pigs could be anywhere. Last time I covered 12+ miles with the slug gun. The gun itself made it difficult to get through some of the brush. I have a feeling the semi-auto 308 would be the same. I got a nice light 308 but its a bolt gun. If a 30-30 is up to the job, then I would trade off some of the power of the 308 for the ease of 30-30 in thick brush. Trade offs.

What you going to do if you shoot one 4 miles in... I am planning to slow down a bit. In the past, my approach has been to start on ridge lines and work down the ridge line in the wind, and check out each finger off the ridge that leads to water. Once you've gone down the ridge and down each finger and back again, you've covered some distance. Sipsey is pretty large. I've always kept moving till I found fresh sign and sometimes that takes a while. Kind of luck of the draw. Don't read the above and think that's my advice to anyone. I'm still unsuccessful in the Sipsey. I'm still trying to figure it all out. When I did finally find sign, I slowed down. When I saw pigs I was on top of them and they moved out of the area. So I don't think I slowed down enough.

A 1100 it's a 30 inch barrel and 5, 000 buck isn't clumsy. Even having two dogs on a leash and dragging a deer ain't clumsy. But I don't even use a sling on the gun. But like I said. To each their own. You call it clumsy and I call it lazy. But it don't matter to me what you use. Be careful out there 12 miles deep in the woods. Good luck on a pig.

Hmmmm, wonder if I can slip away for a weekend to tote the marlin 308mxlr through the woods. Maybe I'll pull the scope off and go iron sights.

30-30 is plenty for hogs............I carry my winchester model 94ae iron sights in my truck and on my four wheeler during the spring and summer so if i run into to hogs I got something for them! Its kills them just as good as my 300 mag does during deer season:)

The 30-30 is plenty of gun. We killed 6 Sunday with a 243 handy rifle in one spot.

I kill them dead as dead can get with 62 grain .223 federal SPs all the time.
30-30 is plenty.

Turning a dog out and driving as close to the bay as I can is more my speed. lol.

believe it or not any bullet will kill a hog. You don't have to buy a specialty bullet for it. Heck I use a old .22 mag the majority of the time.
