I hope to get out, but also don't know how plausible it will be with two jobs and full time school. Also, with no experience, and it sounding like it will be packed, I don't want to get in the way of other people.

Thanks CAM, that makes sense!

I'll be out there with the dogs trying to tree a squirrel Thursday, Friday and Saturday. May go Wednesday afternoon as well. Gonna try and coon hunt it those nights too.

I know on the north side of the river gates were still closed the other day.

They won't have most of them open until Wednesday morning.

So I just joined the forum yesterday after taking my family out for a little sight seeing at Wheeler and then coming back searching for some info about small game hunting there.

Been many years since I hunted, but my oldest boy is getting to the right age and I thought taking him out on Wheeler to look for some squirrels might be a good first hunt with his 410 single shot.

If anyone can point me in the right direction would appreciate it. Not looking to clean them out, would be happy if he got one or two on his first game hunt.

Go pull up wheelers permit. It's got most the details you would need I say. Location of where to to me is just go for a walk and see what you see.

Thanks, I had looked up the permit and ordered a box of steel shot 410 (hard to find) should be here later this week. If that doesn't work out we may walk around up on the WMA.

I ordered my box through Gander Mountain. Ship to store for free, worked out for me. With my current success rate, that box will be a lifetime supply.

Was thinking about south of the river. First thought was the Dancy Bottom Road area. My other thought was around Talley Bottom road area. Truth is, I've never been to either. On the map it just looked like there might be some access to dry areas around those.

So did anyone go out yesterday? I'm still not sure I'll be able to make it this spring, I'm hoping to get out in the woods closer to home on Sunday though. Seriously tempted to try to work some extra time this week and next so I can take off a morning the week after, and hopefully have the place to myself.

I hunted penny bottoms north of the river yesterday afternoon by myself. Made probably 15 or so trees, saw 5 and only killed 2. Made 7 or 8 den trees. I needed a vine shaker or a another shooter hahaha.

I went out yesterday over near the Buckeye Pond area just to see how many people were out and about. At about each gate had 1-2 vehicles there. Also saw 3 game wardens out there. Someone deliberately started 3 fires out there they said. The game wardens didn't really seem to happy. I may go try Saturday afternoon somewhere between Jolly B. & Rock House.

South of the Mooresville area. You can see it on this map:

http://www.fws.gov/southeast/pubs/wlrhnt.pdf

The refuge was friggin' packed last night with coon hunters. Tried the Penny Bottom area and then over around Dancy. First night, everyone was out. Might be fewer folks tonight since it's going to be colder.

Took the boy out this morning south of the river, found some good hardwoods with dens in the trees and nut cuttings all over the ground, but the only squirrel we saw ran across the road in front of us when driving in. Still good quality time, beautiful day, and I let him shoot the 410 a few times before we left. Must have already been hunted over pretty good either last week or in the fall. Didn't see anyone else this morning, heard some shots a good distance off one time.
