I need consensus to whether this is a fatal shot or not. The buck was shot with a sabot slug at 100 yards broadside. After shot he ran 30 yards into the middle of the field. He began feeding. But he was walking with a noticeable limp on his front shoulder where impact took place. Unsure if the follow-up shots hit the buck because he did not seem affected by them. He was limping and I have about a 40 yard blood trail that leads into some heavy briars. I've peaked around the briars and I do not see him. It's possible he he's moved on to the next patch of heavy briars. This happened around 7 AM today.
A tracking dog is not an option. I'm going back into the woods in a little bit after giving him some more time.
The blood trail is light. Wow!

Welp, looks like no deer seen on my last sit. About to get down and scout out a new tree for next year and head home, real life is calling. Wish I could stay all day. Seen an owl, hawks, and I'm currently looking at more woodpeckers than I can count, but no deer.
Killed half as many as last year even with more effort put into summer plots, fall plots and stand locations. I hope for a turn around next year.
Good luck on your last day zone 1 folks and congrats to the killers today.

Moody, this property is tightly enforced and technically, hunting with a dog is prohibited in the county I'm hunting.
Trust me it is not an option.

Feeding after getting shot isn't a good sign, however, I would never give up on a blood trail. I'd give him a few hours. Hopefully he will lie down and take a permanent nap. They love to die in the thickest crap possible

I've been told it's not an option by the local GW this morning. Are you on the Arsenal?

Another morning of 0. Been at least a week and a half since any type of sign on our property. Don't understand but all we can do is keep at it.

Is tracking a wounded deer with a dog considered dog hunting? If so I'm guilty of dog hunting out of dog deer season and hunting in a closed area. I think the gw that told you that is a retard that has no freaking common sense.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Turkey_neck, in the context of my story, yes you would be dog hunting if you expect to come across a live deer.
Guys, the dog discussion is not really relevant to my question. Do you think it was a fatal shot?

No one on here or yourself will ever know until you locate the deer.

Slugger as long as you got good blood I would definitely keep looking, but a deer stopping to feed after being shot is not a good sign. As a matter of fact I don't think I have ever heard of that.....but good luck hope you find him

Just settled in for my last hunt of the year. Setting on a food plot in a cutover. This area hasn't been hunted in about 3 weeks so hopefully something will move on in. As I type this there is a good gobbler pecking around in the plot. His beard is not long but thick as all get out.
