Anyone here small game hunt on Wheeler? I don't have many options on where I can hunt, but would love to try some rabbit hunting or squirrel with my friend. I know you are allowed to hunt those things on Wheeler from Feb. 11-28th, I just don't know if it is worth spending my time doing.

If so, any tips?

If not, any ideas on good places to go around Huntsville?

I figure rabbit hunting would be real hard without a dog, but I had no luck this year (1st season) with deer hunting, and still have an itch to get out and hunt!

Go and wear out some boot leather. It's just scouting for next year and you might get a few squirrels.

Thanks for the info! I'll probably try it once or twice with a friend, just to give it a shot. I have no idea what I'm doing, maybe I'll just watch the people that are there, get some tips from watching.

I plan on getting on some bikes and riding far enough in to avoid most of the other hunters, but we will see.

Wow, I was hoping that the February season would be less crowded than the October one... guess not! Might have to try to make it out during the week instead of the weekend. I went out opening weekend in October and both Wheeler and Swan Creek were swarmed with hunters.

I plan to hunt wheeler in a few areas a good way off the main roads for squirrel and rabbit. I hunted deer south of buckeye pond Saturday and saw a good amount of squirrels out there.

Are .22's allowed? Or does it have to be shotgun w/ steel shot?

Wheeler follows state law for small game weapons, with the exception that all shot must be non-toxic.

Next year I'm using a slingshot smile (I'm not a good enough shot yet to hunt with it this year)

Just thought of something I'd not thought of before ... if Wheeler requires shot to be non-toxic, that doesn't include ammo for the flintlock hunt, right? Patched ball or conicals are, with rare exception, lead.

It is just shotgun shells that are required to be non toxic. Lead in a rimfire or a flintlock is good.

"Small game: Hunters may use arms and ammunition that
comply with current Alabama state hunting regulations
pertaining to small game, except that when using shotguns
hunters must use only non-toxic #4 shot or smaller.
Possession of lead shotgun shells for hunting is prohibited."

10-4. Thanks. Hadn't looked at the regs in a long time.

They changed this year, though I believe they always allowed lead bullets (just not lead shotshells). I was really surprised at how reasonable they were about regulation changes. Fingers are crossed that DCNR is equally reasonable about WMA regulations smile (still have to mail in that petition).

What changed? Looks the same as it has been.

It used to specifically call out rimfire and shotguns, much like the WMA regulations. I'm sure that covered 99% of hunters, but it did leave out some of the other options such as muzzle-loading rifles, slingshots, and blowguns.

Looks like it's now legal to use air rifles, maybe bows. I've often wanted to use both for squirrels.

I hope to, but haven't figured out when I'll be able to yet. 14th is valentines day, my wife has the car for the southern equine expo on the 21, and my son's birthday is the 28th. Can't win for tryin'! I'm half tempted to take a half-day off on the 11th and hit it up that morning.

Jono, the gates will be opened for the small game hunts....no need for a bike.
