What kinda bullets and powder charge that didn't pass through both rib cages with a .308? I shoot some heavy bucks and always get a pass through broad side , 90 degrees behind the shoulder with SSTs out of a .308.

I used 150 corelokt years ago in my .270. Good bullets. I had one round fail to pass through on a 215lb buck at 15 yards.(it was an execution shot on a live buck) they stopped grouping well out of my gun so I switched to 150 nosler partition. I am 100% satisfied. Last year I shot a 125lb doe at an extreme angle at 70 yards. It passed through 36" of flesh and made a wonderful exit. The deer was dead in 25 yards. I'm going to hand load next year as I'm not a fan of paying $50 for a box of ammo.....

I love a pass through because it's supposed to leave more of a blood trail. However I shot an 150 lb 8pt last year, entrance was the size if a ring finger and the exit was 2 thumbs worth through both lungs...didn't find blood till I found the deer.

I'm shooting a 25-06 with 117gr. SST's. 1st buck (230lbs) shot at 40 yds. in the shoulder. Bullet went through one shoulder and didn't hit the opposite shoulder. No blood and he ran about 50 yds. 2nd deer (doe) would have been a tough pass through for any caliber and bullet...long ways. 3rd deer (200lbs) shot at 120 yards through ribs. Went through both sides of ribs and lodged under the skin with no exit. 2nd shot through one hindquarter and lodged in the other. No blood and ran about 70 yds.

Nosler partitions won't shoot out of my gun worth a dang. Per BrentM and 257 I will be trying Barnes next.

i've killed a ton of deer without a pass through with a rifle, but with a bow it sure does help find them. i'd love to have one with every shot IMO.

I was always told it best if the rd. dump al its energy inside & that would create the most shock to the deer s system.

We've all heard that before, and I can't believe it to be anything other than bs.

Did he see which way the deer ran when he shot it? 90 yards ain't that far to have to walk to recover a deer without a dog.

Yes be did, but 85 of those yards were through head high briars in a very thick clear cut. Trust me it aint easy finding one in that kind of stuff whe you have nothing to track. Doing it in the dark is darn near impossible.

I have litterally walked within feet of dead deer and not seen them.

and within 50 yards you cross 20 different trails or ways the deer could have went . i know just what you are saying i have the bier marks on my legs and arms to prove it . lol

I shot a doe this afternoon and had a pass through and only a meager blood trail but enough to follow and find her. Shot with .308

Because I believe "shock" is highly overrated when it comes to deer hunting. I believe that lack of blood to vital organs is responsible for a much greater number of deer kills than "shock" is, and that a clean wound channel with an exit hole the size of my fist will provide a much easier tracking job than just an entry hole the size of a pencil, at best. Deer DO run off a lot of the time, doesn't matter what you shoot them with or where you shoot them, unless you hit the central nervous system (brain/spine), or bust the front shoulder, in which case I've seen them bulldoze off for 50-75 yards or so. They generally die from lack of blood to vital organs.

I started shooting 139 grain Hornady Superformance 7MM Rem Mag this year about midway through the season. I killed one deer with my old .270 using Winchester Super-X (lead tipped). Results:

.270 130 gr Winchester Super X (lead tip) 280 yards - Big bodied 9 pt, great shoulder shot, deer ran 90-100 yards with no exit wound and didn't leave a blood trail for the first 25-30 yards.

7MM Mag 139 gr Hornady SST 336 yards - Bigger 8 pt, same shot placement, didn't flinch and dropped. No exit wound. Had to drag him over 300 yards and he never bled a drop.

7MM Mag 139 gr Hornady SST 58 yards - 100 lb doe, same shot placement, turned her a barrel roll flip. Never seen that. Deer had blood wrapped around her like a band from the flip. There was a solid string of bright red blood for about 10-15 ft past her. Not drops, a solid line. Bullet obviously never expanded. Hardly lost any velocity. Downfall of 7 mag. She did twitch for a few seconds on the ground, but didn't get up of course.

I also believe a bullet should disperse all of its energy inside a deer.Whats the point in a bullet still haveing energy when it exits the other side. As a matter of fact, its less dangerous if the bullet doesn't exit. Look, either way, if someone shoots deer with a high powered rifle with todays ammo, they should fine the deer close by, or they need to look in the mirror. I just don't have the problems that a lot of people have on here with deer running off, after being shot. The few that do, fall within sight.

Have you actually seen a deer shot in the vitals with a fast, quick expanding bullet that doesn't exit?

Nail on the head ^^^^^^. If you do your job on the trigger, you should be able to find a dead deer 50 yards or so WITHOUT a red river blood trail. Sure big ol' exit holes are beneficial, but not necessary, and that was the question.

yeah but some times 50 yards is like a mile . on fairly open ground it aint to bad finding a dead deer but when they are in some of the mess i hunt or have hunted that blood on the ground is the difference in a lost deer or a found deer .

course a lot of my problem is i lung shot all my does if i can . even with the 35 whelen (same with my 7mag) i'm shooting now i have to trail them 30/40 yards but i got a river to follow .

the one i drug out sunday i went straight to her and i ended up as bloody as she was . glad i didn't have to spend a couple hours in that mess trying to find her .

but shooting does and big bucks are two different stories for me. i like a little angle when i pop them and i don't worry about saving meat . lol

I've never understood the POV. I think we all agree the easiest path for a bullet to hit vital organs is broadside through the ribs. It's the closest distance with the least resistance.

Why would that be a good strategy on does and not bucks. Bucks have more muscle mass and heavier shoulders, yet ppl want to shoot a buck where he is most protected. confused

I don't care how big an animal is, if his heart and lungs are destroyed, its going to die and I want a bullet that will reach those vitals, even if the angle isn't perfect.
