I lived out in Nebraska for 6 years back in the late 80's early 90's. I've seen many days way below zero. I can't remember the temp but in 1989 the windchill was -70. Kids were out if school (which NEVER happens) for about three days due to temperatures. I seem to remember that on the news then. Funny how cold weather events are forever frozen in your memories!
