Last night I had to work outside for a short while up here in Minnesota. The temp was -26 and wind was blowing close to 20mph. It's by far the coldest I've ever been. Our heater on the locomotive could not keep up, it was probably 35 degrees in the cab.

Valentine Nebraska, first week of December 2007.
Muzzle loader mule deer hunt.
6-day hunt
The high was 0 with a 10mph wind.
The low was -23 with a 50+ mph wind.

Needless to say it was chilly.

For the record, muzzle-loaders don't work right in those temps.

Coldest I can remember was -22� when I was in Korea

Around -5 on a muzzleloader hunt in Arkansas. It snowed and my gloves froze to the stock.

Minus ten in Hamburg NY with a thirty mph wind. White out conditions and a no driving ban. Glad I was just visiting.

Was in Morris, Illinois back in 2001 for a few weeks in January and February. The last day we were there, I woke up and turned on the weather channel...it was -4 with a -40 wind chill.

2007 - 2011 living in Fargo

slept (or tried to) in the car when I was 18 in Sumpter Co waiting to get on the Lurlean Wallace Cancer Charity hunt at Bellamy Mill. Went down to 9 degrees and I dang sure didn't have enough clothes on.

Second worst was in FL!!!! in LATE turkey season. Slept on a top bunk in an open camphouse with no blanket or heat. Light turkey hunting clothes...daNG NEAR FROZE TO DEATH.

In highschool, a buddy of mine and I drive down to his land in Batesville, MS. Couldn't get into their camp house so we decided to sleep in our trucks. It got down to the low teens that night. We both slept in full hunting gear but still nearly froze. I'd let the truck run for about 5 minutes with heat blowing full blast, then cut truck off (so as not to die from CO buildup) and sleep for about 30 minutes until I woke up freezing. Then repeat. Longest. Night. Ever.

The coldest i've been or the coldest temp i've been in? I've been in -weather before, but had propper clothes on and was ok. The coldest i've been was back in the 90's sometime, afternoon hunt...high was about 20. I had hunted several days in a row and my boots were wet inside from sweat I guess. As dark closed, my boots felt like they had frozen around my feet. Buddy drove across a plowed cotton field to pick me up...otherwise, i don't don't if i coulda walked all the way to the truck. That was a hurting cold.

1) lake logan martin. first time i'd ever been duck hunting. laid out the decoys before daylight; temp was balmy 50s; all three of us managed to fall and fill our waders. but hey, weather was balmy, so we got into the blind to wait for ducks. then one of those fast-mover fronts came through. northwest wind howling. temp dropped 20 degrees or more, fast, in the sleet and snow. 45-minute boat run to warmth; no cover. closest to hyperthermia i've ever come.

2) in the elk river in tennessee, early april, 32F, in a freak snow; colder when i got out of the elk river, wind blowing 10-15 mph, no clothes to change into, waiting for some boy scouts to get a good fire going - which they did. i was covering a boy scout float trip. some scouts had tumped canoes in some shoals. i had volunteered to paddle one of the canoes to the bank. told the scout in the bow: don't move; don't touch a limb if we come close to a brush pile. just sit still (elk was right at flood stage). he grabbed at a limb. you know the rest ...

i have been in much colder weather; camped in 0F, for example. BUT NOT IN THE WET ...

Craig, Colorado Don't recall the temperature. It was a 7 day trip. We stayed in a 'primitive' camp, an uninsulated 12 x 14 wooden storage building with one small electric space heater that put out as much heat as a single candle, 2 bunks beds.

Day one - Nice sunny, no snow except while going over the mountain.

Day two - 6 inches of snow overnight. Pleasantly cold.

Day three - 6 more inches of snow...

Day four - water froze up at camp. No more hot water, showers.

Day five - This is when it became problematic peeing.

Day six - Heavy snow, winds in excess of 30mph. I was overlooking a valley on a mountain top. The wind was forcing the snow to climb up the mountain and hit me in the chin. At sometime during this hunt I contemplated jumping.

Day seven - Completely numb from the waist down from sitting in snow the past 7 days. My bones froze that morning.


It took weeks to warm back up. Although we tried on several nights, whiskey wouldn't even do the trick.

I hope to go back soon.

Standing in a long line waiting to climb iced over metal stairs on a tarmac in Istanbul @ ~30�F, wet sleet, windy. It must have taken 30 mins to get on the plane. All that I was wearing was a very light weight (non-waterproof) wind breaker.

It was so cold I couldn't tell how bad the people around me smelled. It took forever for older people to climb the stairs.

TN. Muzzleloader hunt. About 5'F and windy.

1997 ice storm. I was on a ladder with ice coating everything. Feet froze to the ladder. Second of 4 fires that day. Left hose frozen to the ground at each site. By number 3 we were dragging burning debris to the front yard to warm us during rehab. I remember breaking chunks of ice from my gear.

I also remember thinking I'd never feel warm again.

I started keeping duffle bags of hand warmers and wool socks on the engine for the crew..just in case.

What is it about getting cold that sticks with you for so long. I feel like I need to climb into a hot tub for a few hours to thaw myself out. No worries it's already warmed up to -13 with a -31 wind chill. I'll be in flop flops before ya know it.

Oil Sands in North Alberta, -45 with wind. Stay away from anywhere every parking lot has plug in's for your block heater.

Winter of 1986 or 1987. Ohio - I was in high school. Wind chill factor of about -60. It hit Christmas eve. Harvest was late that year and we weren't through winterizing the farm yet. We had had a 100 cows to milk and about 150 head of other stock to look after. We went about 56 hours with no sleep trying to keep pumps going, automatic waterers running, and cows milked. Our Christmas "celebration" consisted of a 45 minute hot meal for lunch Christmas day......It was pure misery!!!!

I lived out in Nebraska for 6 years back in the late 80's early 90's. I've seen many days way below zero. I can't remember the temp but in 1989 the windchill was -70. Kids were out if school (which NEVER happens) for about three days due to temperatures.
