Dang, I seen a man KILLED over a dog shooting once. And another dog killing come dang near to a multiple killing.

Losts of people want tolerate, tresspassing dogs. I too dont blame someone that has limited day to hunt for shooting a dog on his lease. People now a day simply will not pay good money for land or leases and have other peoples dogs running all over it. Emotions run high on both sides. Some people just dont like dogs, some love them as children. Bottom line is if you dont want your dogs killed, keep them on your property. thumbup

13A-11-14(3) killing without good cause a dog belonging to someone else

Class A misdemeanor Animal Cruelty State of Al Constitution.

it is illegal to kill someone dog just for walking on your property.

Fred, at what point does the shelby county leash law come into play here? Or do we ignore that?

Isnt speeding also a misdemeanor??? WHEN people are mad about a tresspassing dog, I dont think worrying about a misdemeanor really crosses their mind. Emotions run high both ways. Im am suprised that more people arent killed over tresspassing aniamls. Each group feels they are right. IF you deciede to kill a trespassing dog, I guess you need to be prepared to deal with the out come! thumbup

If I ever killed one it would be because it was being aggressive and I felt like it was going to attack me.

Ok true story here: Back in the early 80's buddy of mine dog got shot (yellow lab) on a deer drive. The dog got loose from Big Jims (not his real name) house and crossed the property line and started running with the drivers dogs..they didnt like it, so they shot it. It was on there property. Big Jim who owned the dog worked in the Coal Mines in Adger # (underground welder). We worked on and off together over the years. I will tell you he was one man who always had a smile, but you didnt want to mess with. He was divorced, with one daughter, with nothing to loose, and had a little record at the time. That dog was his 10 yr old daughters dog, and his daughter was his life. He showed me pics of the girl with that dog all the time. Once Big Jim figured out who shot the dog and who all was envolved, there was no turning him back. He greeted two men on the same day with a 2x4, left one man with no teeth and a broken arm, and the other I would rather not say. Anyway, both men did not press charges because Big Jim had cousins and brothers with nothing to loose either. I encourage those who feel they need to shoot a dog to just think about the what-ifs prior. Big Jim ended up having a free yellow lab given to him from a co-worker who breeded them after he beat the life out of those two guys.

Lots of dog hunter storys like this. Fact is some people will REFUSE to take an azz whooping like that you discribed. In this case you state the man that shot the dog would have had a legal right to kill h the man with a 2x4. I dont think any aniaml is worth a persons life. BUT if a persons dog get shot that doent give him the right to attack or try to kill the one that shot it. That is a good way to get kill, buy someone who has a gun AND training.

So is the collar the deciding factor.? Is it legal to kill an un collared dog but not one with a collar? I have let collared dogs walk and even tried to find where they lived to inform the owner. Last week I meet 2 un collared dogs in the road on my way in. They stood their ground barking then came closer to me. I had them lined up for a 2 fer and just as i clicked the safety they suddenly busted out of there running wide open. They never slowed down. I believe they had been shot at before and if I see them again it will be the last time. Im not taking a chance of them getting the drop on me or someone else in the dark

I have hunted many places with houses around with pets roaming free, seen a lot of dogs pass through and 10 minutes later deer come through. Most breeds of yard dogs wont even bother chasing a deer, yeah I know some will. But the ones that don't the deer get used to them being around so they don't pay much attention to them, as long as they don't get too close. Years ago my brother's dog showed up looking for him after he was in the tree for about 30 minutes, the dog came up sniffing around and laid down at the bottom of his tree. 20 minutes later he had 4 does pass with in 30 yards. They stopped and looked at the dog for a minute then went on their way, never spooked, dog also paid them no attention.

Im from the" Country" where you live. Grew up around ST.Clair county and Steel Flat woods. I know all the stories. Point is just because you think your going to kill someone for kill a dog, DOESNT mean its going to work-out for you. I cant honestly beleive that some people on here woulkd put more value on an aniamals life than a HUMAN life. After all their just aniamals. Shooting dogs is a personal choice. I just find it sad that people put more value on aniamls live VS human.
