A buddy of mine in south Bama caught 27 Saturday night in a single trap. He is military. He prebaited a location for about 2 weeks and had two sounders hitting it. As the two started racing to get the feed each night they both started showing up at the same time.
He left for Hawaii on Dec 8th for his last tour of duty before he retires. He had a partner set up the trap on the morning of the 13th. He got the first picture that night at 19:20 military time and at 19:27 he had all 27 in the trap and triggered it from Hawaii. Caught all 27. He knocked out both sounders in one catch. It dang sure doesn't always work like that.
The distance is not really a big deal. As long as you have cell service it will work.
The part of the story I like is adjoining landowners worked together on their hog problem. They shared the expense and selected the best trap location from both properties. The pigs were obviously doing damage on both properties.
Estimated time spent on this catch. Prebaiting and scouting 2 hrs. Setting up the trap 3 hrs. Monitoring the pictures and removing the hogs 1 hr. Six hours spent on this catch.
Works out to be about 13.3 minutes per hog. I would say that is pretty efficient and effective.

Trapping is the best method for control, no doubt. Takes a commitment of money, time and getting folks on board.

I agree that on small acreage trapping is your best bet. But as for as large acreage if u want to make a difference it takes a joint effort from all 3 parties. Shoot the ones u see, Trap the ones that will go in the trap and and catch the ones that won't with dogs. But with that said a lot of land owners that don't have crops (which is a lot in my area) don't care if they have hogs or not they jus grow timber and lease it for deer hunting. And 90% ain't gonna pay somebody to trap thier place so for all except deer season it's just a breeding ground for hogs.

I agree with the 3 step approach. But, I do believe the trapping should take place first. Then hammered them with the other two approaches. That is just my opinion.

Amazing story. Hard to believe you can trigger the catch like that with cell service.

What about the time it took to dispose of 27 hogs? That only takes seconds. You can pull into just about any hangout in a small town and tell the folks standing around that you have free pigs to give away. They will be gone before the tail gate falls good. LOL But, if you want to skin them yourself, it will take more time to skin them than it did for you to catch them. LOL

This summer we load 2 boar hogs in the trunk of a Buick straight on the carpet. That was one happy man. He wanted him a hog bad.

I really don't know. I didn't sell him the trap and I don't know how many pigs he has already caught this year with it. But, on this catch alone it would have been about $130 per pig.
If you assume he can catch 100 pigs a year with the trap and that the annual cost for the camera card, corn, and batteries is $1,000. Here is what the per pig cost would be over the next 10 years (estimated life of the trap).
Year - Cost per year - AVG catch per year - Cost per pig 1 - $4,000 - 100 - $40 2 - $1,000 - 100 - $25 3 - $1,000 - 100 - $20 4 - $1,000 - 100 - $18 5 - $1,000 - 100 - $16 6 - $1,000 - 100 - $15 7 - $1,000 - 100 - $14 8 - $1,000 - 100 - $14 9 - $1,000 - 100 - $13 10 - $1,000 - 100 - $13

Even if you double the per year cost to $2,000 it is still less than $25 per pig from year 4 and after.
But, it won't cost $2,000 per year. SMS card per month is $25, corn is $30 per month, batteries are $20 per month. A brick of 22 bullets is $50 and will kill lots of pigs, you only burn gas to take out pigs or refill the feeder or change batteries and many times you can do that when you take out the pigs anyway.
So, if we split the difference at $1,500 per year you are at $20 or less at year 5 and after.

That is a nice breakdown over a 10 year period, and the price per pig does seem very economical after 10 years. The only problem I see is that if you assume he catches 100 in year 1 and catches 100 a year through year 10, he probably needs to try a different approach because he isn't really putting a dent in the population. You would hope to see an exponential decline in hog population over a 10 year period if your method was truly effective.

I assume we are both talking trapping the same property for 10 years.

Even if you remove let's say 80% you are still going to have a few sows that have litters and you have to catch them. And of course there is the size of the property. I don't think I have had anyone buy a trap from me that has less than around 900 acres. And most have multiple properties. But, you are correct, it was an estimate.

All the other years were just gravy.

I caught 203 hogs with dogs hunting this year in the months of February, may, June, July, August and September With 183 of them being on 2 joining landowners at a cost of $0.00 per hog to the Land owners. I have no problem with trapping, I do some myself, but as far as cost to the landowner DOGS by far is the most cost efficient. That being said, common sense will tell you using all three methods would give you best results in lowering the overall hog population.
