You're out in an area that you've previously scouted and you decide to sit down next to a tree to wait for a deer to come by. You sit so that you can keep an eye on the area you expect the deer to come from.

After about an hour, you maybe nod off to sleep for just a moment. Or maybe you're checking ALDeer or quietly crushing some candy. Or maybe you're looking at something in front of you, wondering if that shape is a stump or a deer.

Suddenly you see a movement out of the corner of your eye. Slowly, slowly you turn to look and it's a deer. He's come up behind you from down wind, and now he's seen you and is staring you down. Your gun is across your knees, but you know that if you pick it up, shoulder it, and turn to fire he will be gone.

What do you do?

Been there before. I turned around quickly, shouldered my rifle ,shot and killed the deer. They are fast but not that fast. I shot the deer before it ran 15 yds.

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Don't take your eyes off him, grab gun and put it to shoulder to fire, then yell at him to stop him while he's running off in an attempt to stop him.

I know a guy who wears a coach's whistle while hunting. He blows that whistle as hard as he can to stop a buck that's running away. I've seen him with my own eyes stop a running buck with that whistle and then make a good shot to bag him. Kind of crazy, but it works.

I had something similar happen to me after leaning my rifle on a tree and walking away roughly 10 yrds talking on my cell about a job we were doing. I know it was stupid, but I had to talk to the guy when he called me as we were working out issues on job site (phone on vibrate mode). The bad part was I had rattled hard about an hour prior and beat up the ground pretty good. Long story short the buck creeped up on me with his head bobbing up and down with nose up in the air. Im completely still and he is looking right at me while Im holding my cell and my rifle is leaning against a tree. Want ever do that again ! Here's my sign...

I've killed a couple in that situation by running straight after them when they run.
Keeping my eye on them. Be ready to shoot when they stop. Sometimes they keep running and sometimes they will stop to see WTH is chasing em. Gotta be quick though.

If it's a doe and she's busted my scent and starts stomping and snorting behind me, usually I turn my head real fast to see what kind of bugger man is coming to get me and she runs off blowing and such.

Duh, you're clearly new here.

You do a "LFTG" and then post and ask that question.

After a bad rain one morning, I slipped down an old bush hogged road and sat down about 75 yards downwind of the deer crossing I was hunting. I grunted and hit my Primos can a couple times. I caught something out the corner of my eye and there was a buck coming towards me from the way I walked in. I'm right handed, and this deer was on my extreme right the way I was sitting. I swapped shoulders without him noticing and started inching the barrel of my gun around. He saw me, but was too curious for too long. Just don't make sudden movements and you have a chance. Quick movements always lead to quick departures.
