Why not lease out parts of the land that could be planted in corn or soybeans. That would help the local farmers this helping the local economy and benefit all wildlife on the WMA. Also, it would put more money into the state wildlife fund from leasing the land out. The DCNR leases much of its WMA land from private holders. Sub-leasing probably isn't an option unless the landowner wanted to do this. Well that kinda shits on my idea...

I don't hunt Black Warrior (yet anyway), but I commend you for coming on here and fielding some of the questions/concerns. By answering the "whys" rather than just saying "Trust me, I know best", it builds public trust and confidence in your program.
One idea for WMA's would be to put a Likes/Dislikes box at the check station and then come up with someway to communicate back to the public the most common concerns. Maybe Black Warrior is already doing this, but others are not. Many dislikes could most likely be addressed by giving the "why" and not actually doing anything different.

Most all of the suggestions/solutions are "what can the state do to improve my hunting?". No offense intended but the wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly. My suggestion is individuals coming together to partner with state workers to increase their efficiency & handle needed maitenance/ground improvements.
This would need to be organized for each WMA but I am certain the manager would love to work with groups. They could pick up trash, drain mud holes in roads, shovel gravel in ruts, improve trails & any number of odd jobs. The true atvantage lies not so much in the ground improvements. A little sweat equity would do a lot to open the lines of communication.

My only advice would be for the state land managers to continue their fine efforts working with landowners to keep the WMA land in the system.
I'm really just thankful we have these areas to hunt. The barrier of entry for joining a club, leasing, or buying hunting land is substantial to many of the new hunters.

Skyline needs to get on some type of burn program with all the cutovers. Skyline needs to do away with a lot of either sex rifle hunts. Game wardens need to be seen in other places than the main drag off 79. Food plots need to be planted in perennial type crops. I don't hunt skyline, but our property borders it. I've never understood why it's not a better management area to hunt, other than the obvious…too many gun hunts, no restrictions on buck size/ age (in the area that borders us and just recently in the other area), lack of habitat management. It does seem things are starting to change for the better but for years it was abused and mismanaged. As good as Jackson Co. has been over the past 15 years, Skyline should be top 5 mgt areas every year. Trigger control seems to also be a major problem. I'm hoping hunters are making better choices on what they shoot now, but for years it seemed like 95% of the bucks killed were yearlings. also agree with CD…people seem to appreciate things in life more when they aren't free. a few bucks for WMA permits would go a long way.

Quit making and/or changing the rules, regulations, seasons and bag limits every dang year, especially in Black Warrior. I'm sorry for doing my job. I came in just under three years ago, saw some things that needed changing, got a LOT of feedback from hunters, collected data to support the changes, and did as my job requires. I guess leaving everything alone and status quo is better? That is why you READ the permit. If you read it every year, then changes are not a big deal. If anything, hunting on BW WMA should be less confusing than when I got there, but since people don't read the permit, it's been a big cluster. I'm not going to go into details, but I get asked questions on a daily basis about simple things that are answered on the first paragraph of the permit, if people would just read it. No dog in this fight, but I would think any hunter would be excited and appreciative of someone that comes in, collects data, asks for hunter opinions and then revises the regulations in an effort to improve quality of hunting. I don't think some of you would survive in other states that have much more restrictive/ structured regulations. Of course, those are also states with the best hunting, so maybe hunter mentality and quality of hunting go hand in hand.

I don't think it's a "fight" and I hope Matt doesn't think so either....The OP asked for ideas on making WMAs better, I simply give my opinion about the BW. I didn't jump anyone's arse and I wasn't ranting and raving about it.
I would just like to see more consistency from year to year in the regs... They have been ever changing over the last 10-15 years not just since Matt started.
I've always thought they needed to come up with some type reasonable, well thought out management plan and stick with it rather than changing things every couple years to fit "Joe Blows" agenda. That sounds like what Matt is doing and I hope he sticks around to see it through...

Florida has Special Opportunity hunts at select WMAs for deer and turkey. Pressure is highly controlled and these hunts are extremely popular due to the quality of the hunts, sightings and kills. It's a draw so it's far from all access.

I know a guy last week at the Barbour Co WMA that shot two yearlings in one afternoon and they were both under 40 pounds. I doubt he checked them in either. So to take this a step further did you do your duty to report it to the area biologist/warden?

Yeah lets just make it more expensive.... $45 for license and it cost me 20 a trip to lowndes and back now... Just throw money at it. The state will use the money to make the hunting better... (not holding my breath) Thats exactly what I want to happen make it more expensive for me to hunt semi managed public land... No thanks I'll pass on that... Now if what I said was possible it would create more food for the deer and money in everyones pocket... That idea I am ok with. Helps all parties... Also actually collecting the data on every deer killed and using that data to determine how many bucks/does need to be harvested per year and figure out how to meet that number... That sounds good to me too.
