Yep. I killed one recently that I wasn't gonna attempt to drag. We quartered it up in the field and packed it out in a backpack.

My God son and hunting buddy has worked and still does part time at a processor. He grew up gutting deer there with his dad when he was alive. I haven't gutted a deer or quarter one up in a long time. But I could if I had too.

Gut it and wash ASAP. Then cool it down at home or at the processor. Especilly in warmer weather. .02

I hang mine up, skin it, debone it while its hanging, and never open the guts. I have a cooler full of deboned venison in the same amount of time it takes someone else just to field dress a deer.

It amazes me at the number of hunters that don't field dress their deer. Many don't even know how.

On post we have to bring them back to the check station whole. Most deer I've seen here in NC are in the 140lbs range who dragging them is not back breaking "no pun intended". We do have good facilities here for skinning and a cooler we can leave them in for up to 3 days. I always gut mine as soon as possible and let them hang and wash them out good before dropping them off at the processor.

That wild taste comes from not knowing how to properly butcher the meat. No need to soak in water unless its a buck that is in prime rut otherwise cutting all the sinew from the meat and the scent glands inside the meat will remove pretty much all that taste most complain about. Other than that you just probably don't like the taste of deer meat.

By the way hello again it's been awhile since my last post. I usually get on around this time of the year. Too busy other times but do enjoy following the site when season is in. Good luck and God bless you all this season.
