I only checked them once. These bucks went from coming to mineral lick and corn at least 4 days a week during shooting hours (late July thru early Sept.) to almost none (during shooting hours) by last couple of weeks of September.

Two reasons, food sources have changed, but for the most part it's b/c they change when they shed their velvet. You could take 10,000 acres with no pressure and come early to mid Oct. half your bucks are going to change their core area, feeding habits, feeding location, etc.

For the naysayers I have a question... if it really is pressure explain why I can put out a camera and corn around the end of July, check it mid August and have 100's of pics of mature bucks, starting just a day after I put the cam out. Then come back in late August and have same number of pics of same bucks. Come back around the 10th of Sept...same story. Then come back Sept. 30th and have same bucks coming to same camera but just earlier or later than they were coming. Only variables I know of are food and velvet shedding... I could be wrong but I'd be willing to bet that if you put out a cam over a feeder with unlimited bait in late July and didn't check it until October 1st you would see a dramatic drop in day time pictures starting around the 20th of Sept.

I think a buck knows the difference b/w camera checking pressure and hunting pressure, just like they know the difference b/w a farmer and a hunter. Now checking cameras during hunting season is a completely different story. your just adding more pressure to an already pressured area during a time of year where bucks know they are being hunted. This can really kill your chance at a mature buck. Just all speculation, but makes sense to me.

Guys saying food have a point, right now alot is going on in the whitetail world in Alabama. Crops are being havested, acorns dropping , browse is cahnging and plenty of humans tramping around stinking the woods up. Most likely a combination of all of the above.

"Why do you ask"?

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

Could the seasonal change along with reduced daylight hours account for any of it?

My personal observations ...
  • I've been checking cameras for several months and evidently my presence didn't disrupt a thing because the deer kept coming to my bottom land spots. I went into their territory 6 to 8 times too ...
  • Granted these were all does and a few spikes but no mature bucks.
  • Their pattern didn't change until the acorns started falling then they disappeared.
  • There are few acorns in the bottoms ...

Based on what you guys have said and what I've observed, I'm going to have to assume that the deer I've seen in the past are further up the hills bedding and eating with no real need to come down to the bottoms right now

I understand that I am in the very vast minority here.....but I gotta say it.
I'm gonna get blasted...

For me, checking cams doesn't add any pressure to my deer. HUNTING adds pressure to my deer. I don't hunt them until I see what I need to see on the cameras.. While I don't check cameras year round, I do probably 8 months a year. When I am feeding and/or running cams, I may go into a place a couple of times a week to check the camera. And it ain't scent free in my hunting clothes being friggin quiet. It is with music blaring me setting a beer on the hood of the truck never cutting the truck off type of feeding. Now, I do the majority of it at night...so that might make a difference. Maybe because this is always how I have done so it don't bother them. My theory is that if you go in there trying to be quiet and all that crap you give them the sense that you are trying to "hunt them". I check camera's during season. It doesn't affect my deer's daylight movement.

Most of the time, I kill what I intend to kill.

I think they just change their patterns this time of year...every year. Period. You may get a bachelor group that will start showing back up during the daylight...Or you might not. Deer are just deer.

I think there is something too not acting normally as you run cameras and fill feeders. I've hunted where I could see a road and where farmers where out feeding cows, etc. I've seen deer watch ppl go by in cars and never pay them any mind, but as soon as a vehicle stops, they book it.

Same way with farmers and tractors. The deer simply pay no attention to it.

A couple times a week 8 months out of the year! Hmmmmm, so deer can tell the difference between your 2 times a week trips without a gun and your trips with one? Do you rattle the feed bucket when you are hunting? laugh

For those that think a deer can distinguish between harmful intent and non harmful intent, y'all are giving deer way too much credit in the intelligence department. They are dumb as dirt but have a great survival instinct. Everything they do is based around survival. The reason they get used to farmers is because the farmer is there every day and isn't in their bedroom. If you put feeders in fields and visit them everyday the deer will get used to you too.

No. A big black cattle protein tub. It holds WAY more!!!

And who said I didn't take a gun any of the time?

Perhaps us being there multiple days a week is the difference but checking cameras, most of which I drive up to on plots, has not had any effect on us killing older bucks, or does for that matter.

In fact, there is no doubt that our success rate had went up since we began running cameras on plots during the season. We may not kill them on plots but those cameras tell us when and where those bucks are moving. Even so, probably half are killed on those plots.

Now, we are not your member absent for 5 month club either. We are there messing around at least 3 days a week year round.

they distinguish harmful intent vs. non harmful intent through their survival instinct. I don't think deer are very smart but they are great at figuring out trends or patterns. If the trend is a person drives up to a field and dumps out corn and leaves, especially during a time of year when there are no gun shots, no increase in 4 wheelers, etc. they are going to learn that there is no harm. Exact opposite when deer start smelling humans in places they haven't been all summer, hearing them/ seeing them/ smelling them before sun up in the woods and hearing 4 wheelers crank up and hear gun shots going off. Probably another reason MW deer aren't as skittish. Woods aren't nearly deep so deer are used to seeing humans in and around the woodlots and fields all year long. Kind of different than seeing humans in the middle of 2000 acres of hardwoods or pines at only certain times of the year.
