Anyone know a good gunsmith that does work on shortening a barrel and tapping for a choke? I'm thinking of cutting down the barrel on a Japanese A5 from 30" VR to 26".

Colonial Arms in Daphne threads them. They just don't cut and re-crown. ( O at least didn't last time I talked to them.) Nice folks too!

With as high as those tap and die sets are for each individual choke manufacturer good luck. They are about $130 for each one

I had thought about finding just another barrel, but they are high. I figured I'd be able to find someone to cut and tap the existing one. Seems like there aren't a lot of folks out there that do that type of work.

I mean it can be done. You would just have to pay out the wazoo for it.

I had one threaded and choked by Colonial Arms. Think they charged me $200 for an O/U with a set of chokes. I don't have it cut down, just choked.

Mike Orlen does excellent barrel work with very reasonable rates.
