It's rediculous what they taught me all the way through public school. Now that I look back on it. I specifically remember watching a video talking about the types of government and the woman representing socialism was a fat happy and charasmatic woman. Makes me think hard about sending my son. I also went to boarding school in Georgia and it was one of the better experiences of my life. There's no telling what it did for me.

Yep I finished 10-11 home schooling! I'd like my kids to go to a public school but they seem to be getting worse

I moved my family 16 years ago to where I am now. The number one reason was public school system. My daughter went thru public school and my son is going in the 9th this year. Coming from Conecuh county, Alex City public schools have been a blessing.
Not all private schools are what they are cracked up to be either.

Not all private schools are what they are cracked up to be either. Same here as far as moving. I know some pretty sorry private schools that are providing little to know education. There are some out there that are just babysitting the kids. Some of them are church affiliated. As with everything else, people need to really investigate the schools they send their children to, public or private.

Not to poke at you guys who send your kids to private school, but my wife (who teaches at a public middle school) & I have a different position:
If all of the good kids with good parents get pulled from public schools and sent to private schools, then why are we surprised when we see what happens with what is left. Why are the good folks always so willingly to quietly go away instead of getting involved in making something better?
Maybe what Daniel is experiencing is a result of a dozen or so good folks pulling their good kids out of the school. What kind of positive impact could those good folks and good kids have on the class as a whole?
My wifes school started an Academy a couple of years ago. Essentially, it is like a magnet school within the school. Thanks to No Child Left Behind( aka No Child Gets Ahead), the school was previously unable to set aside advance track students. The academy has allowed them to do that. Since its inception, the # of kids transferring out to private schools & magnet schools has dropped from nearly 40% to around 15%. As the school retains more of those kids, the overall school improves.

That may work in some schools but others have just been over run due to population and demographic changes in certain areas. It's not only the education you have to worry about. You have to control on some level who your children associate with in their childhood years and the effect that has on their entire development.

Why are the good folks always so willingly to quietly go away instead of getting involved in making something better? For me personally....it's for the protection of my children until such time that they have a rock solid faith and can stand firm against the evils of this world. Jesus Christ didn't call 5th graders to evangelize the world, but instead called grown men and women who had the fortitude, faith, and God given wisdom to stand strong in the face of evil. I'm at peace that he doesn't expect mine to endure such a calling either. They will have PLENTY of time to be head long in this messed up, secular world taking a stand for Christ when they're adults. As for now, we have chosen to protect their moral innocence and build up their Biblical knowledge and wisdom, to the best of our God given abilities, until such time that they are ready to head out into whatever God calls them to do. In today's society, in my humble opinion, it's almost impossible to do it in a public school. Folks with similar goals are simply far outnumbered these days.

We bought our home in Hoover for the school system, enjoyed the benefits, paid high taxes and are now watching as it sinks toward mediocrity because of all the expansion. Our kids are out of school & the house is on the market below appraised value.

No. I'm saying what we pay in property taxes in Alabama is a fraction of what people pay in other states.
You pay one way or the other.

Since its inception, the # of kids transferring out to private schools & magnet schools has dropped from nearly 40% to around 15%. As the school retains more of those kids, the overall school improves. That only works in theory. I don't want to send my kids to a substandard, unsafe school in hopes that other people's kids will step it up. As has already been said, it's not just about academics. For girls especially it's about safety. It's also about the level of expectations in the school. I paid for 12 years of private school for my two sons. Best money I ever spent. At their school, it wasn't a matter of "if you were going to college" if was "where are you going to college". Expectations were very high. I have been very blessed by the fact that both my sons are doctors. They both knew what they wanted to do at an early age and going to school with classmates whose moms or dads were doctors made a difference. Where to send your kids to school is a uniquely private decision that only you and your wife can make. You make it for better or for worse. Just like what their names will be or how you want to handle Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. You get to decide.

It is what it is. Mr. White I understand you 100%. I live way out in the country as I assume you do from your post on here. It's the same at the surrounding schools here . Your doing your part and raising your kids great. Your OK in my book.

Why are the good folks always so willingly to quietly go away instead of getting involved in making something better? Part of the reason is because, at some point, you just finally throw up your hands in disgust and exit. Those who run for the doors at the very first sign of a problem are the ones you don't want around. They're asshat quitters. The ones who legitimately and sincerely try to find solutions and help situations but are continually rebuffed, ignored, beaten down (theoretically speaking) or marginalized are the ones who usually eventually give up. Same with other things in other walks of life, too. You can work as hard as possible, have meetings, have private discussions, get into arguments, make the very specific points that clearly illustrate a problem and hope your work conditions improve, but if you're ignored, rebuffed or marginalized then at some point you give up. You either become a drone taking the check and marking time, or you find another job and get the hell out of a bad situation.

Since its inception, the # of kids transferring out to private schools & magnet schools has dropped from nearly 40% to around 15%. As the school retains more of those kids, the overall school improves. That only works in theory. Actually, it doesn't just work in theory...it does work. Here's the problem though. At some point, it's too late to "recover" from the private school flight, and no one wants to be the first to break the cycle. That's exactly the situation my wife and I are in. We are not about to pull our son out of an excellent small private school to place him in public schools where he'd be one of two or three white kids in a class of 20. I'm not being racist in saying that, I'm just being truthful. That said, I'm not under any illusion that white folks are less to blame that anyone, though. I distinctly remember having a conversation with a pal of mine before my son was born. He was defending sending his kids to private schools, saying "well, the blacks have taken over the public schools". I looked him dead in eye, and told him that the blacks didn't take anything over, the whites let them have it. He didn't like it, but he knew it was the truth. Unfortunately, the genie's out of the bottle now, and there's no way to get it back in at this point. The main purpose of integration of public schools decades ago was to bring the blacks up to the level of the whites. Guess what...it's had the opposite effect. You don't see any black kids trying to act white, but you sure see a helluva lot of white kids that apparently want to be black. Makes me sick every time I see a white kid running around with a cap without a bend in the bill, or their pants sagging, etc.

We also have the fast track classes that our kids work at a very fast pace.

You pay one way or the other. Got ya. It is Alabama, land is not worth as much. Also, throwing $ at schools isn't the answer anyway. Proven many times.

Helena housing is booming because of the new high school. I just hope the high school is a good as the other schools.

you got it!
I have an associate in Montgomery who tells me they built a new high school way out east where the houses are 250K and up. Spent millions on a state of the art high school. Well, the zone takes in the high rent property tax base then goes for many miles thru ghettoville.
No one wants that damn school in their backyard now and the homeowners are scared sh*tless their 300K house will now never sell for the purchase price. Homeowners got ambushed by marxist govt educrats!
Bad schools kill local real estate values. The blackucrats and educrats have ruined what was to be a beacon for public education with race based thug friendly zoning. 80% of blacks are born to single moms in public housing. Its worse than hogs and we cant set any traps or get depredation permits either.
