If you spine shot a deer, climb down and put in your second shot at close range, no reason to risk another bad shot.....or 2.

Play out EVERY foreseeable scenario when hunting a new stand. Where to put the bow hanger, standing, drawing every direction, sitting and reaching for the bow...everything. A big 5yo+ nanny will likely still give you a big screwing but at least you'll be well lubed.

This season will be my 38th chasing deer with a stick and string. Not getting caught drawing is one of the hardest things I had to learn, can't be bought, taught or faked, you have to learn on your own. Whether you have one or several around you it is a challenge, thats why I love it SO much.

Once a new stand is in place, sit in it for an hour or two and get used to adjusting your positions. Check your lines of sight and see how much noise the stand will make after it's settle in the tree for a few days by itself.

When climbing in an area for the first time trust your first instincts on where to climb. I've changed my mind on trees before climbing several times and it cost me shots on deer.

when getting in the stand for the 1st time, make sure wasp hasn't decided to take up residence.

Practice, practice practice at 50-60 yards. It makes those 40 yards and in shots seem really easy when it really counts.

1) Always Stand the last hour of an evening hunt. 2) Focus on hitting the deer in a small spot, not the just the mid section. 3) Calm yourself down and talk to yourself step by step on what to do next. (still hard for me). I call #2 Aim small miss small... Use it in every pistol class I teach.

Stay standing as much as possible.

If setting up climber in the dark, make sure tree is alive. Saves time and could save your life. Made that mistake once as a a kid.

One thing I do that I think helps not being noticed while drawing back on a deer is to push the riser away from you instead of pulling the string back. I've always had a habit of holding my elbow out when drawing back and I think that's what the deer sees.
