Then why does everyone want to charge you to hunt them? If they are as big of a problem in AL as everyone says then why wouldn't people let you hunt them for free?

because the people that have them have realized they can charge folks to hunt them. hogs are a big problem to farmers but they are not a problem to a man with timberland that he is just goin to lease for hunting rights and grow trees. The number one reason being is that some businesses are promoting how hogs will take over the world if you don't pay me to stop them and the outdoor channel and all the other fake hog shows blowing them way out of proportion. don't get me wrong for the small portion of Alabama farm land that has hogs it is bad but for the majority of Alabama Hogs are not a problem.

And for the record before anything gets started I am not pointing out Barry when I said businesses

They want to charge because its more of a guaranteed success than deer and you cant shoot them year round. Folks that got money to pay for hunts also do not have time to hunt when deer are in season. Hogs are year round so it fits the schedule much better.

Myself, I dont have much free time to hunt in January though I really want to. But I can go shoot a pig in April when I do have time. Fortunately, I have family land and other places to hunt as well so pigs are what I stalk when I got the time.

The people that they are REALLY a problem to are either taking care of the problem themselves, in their own way.....be it trappers, doggers, shooters, whatever.....

And, that is a SMALL percentage of landowners/leaseholders; mostly Farmers or wealthy Recreational Properties.

Obviously, they are not a 'problem' in the other 95% of Alabama.

It is access to property with a huntable population of hogs.

There is hysteria associated with wild hogs. Much of the hysteria appears overblown and irrational. If the much hyped exponential growth of hogs was totally accurate, then they would already have taken over the world. Nature has a way of working things out.

The farmers will take care of their own problem if they need to.

On agricultural property where the goal is to make money from growing vegetables hogs are a serious problem right up there with blight plant diseases. For that you have no choice but to kill the pigs and treat them like rats.

They are only real bad in some places. But, where they are bad....they are AWFUL!!!

I am hearing more and more stories from foresters as well. I have had 3 lately tell me of 40+ acre tracks of freshly planted pines being totally uprooted. I have seen several places with my own eyes of young pines being destroyed. Guess it just ain't crops anymore.

Where's these 40+ ac tracts of pines located?

I've never seen 40 ac of corn totally uprooted, around here I've seen 1 to 5 ac out of a 100 ac field destroyed.

I lease a 140 ac tract that the land owner had planted in pines last year and foresters told him the hogs rooted up ALL his trees, myself and the landowner walked the tract out could find NO real damage at all from hogs. maybe 15 to 20 trees at most, there were 3 times that many dead because they were a Jrooted.

It looks a lot better if they can blame it on something else so let's blame the hogs...

There's a lot of "TreePlanters" that would love for you to believe that the hogs are the reason that you don't have a good stand after you have payed them big money to plant your property.

Posted elsewhere... I have seen an Olympic/International sized soccer field, freshly sodded - destroyed completely overnight! Looked like it had been run over by a 16 bottom plow and 4x4 dually JD!

I think they are looking for grubs or nutgrass more than the trees. But, if the trees have that gell material used to keep the roots wet that is what they are after. Had several fruit and nut trees rooted up when I used some of that water absorbing material in the bottom of the hole. Quickly learned not to use that stuff if I wanted to keep my trees.

K bush you got to becareful with fertilizer too. I put some around my apple trees and the hogs rooted up every one.

People across the US are finding out they can make a buck of hunters. Greed gets them everytime.

I would not mind paying for a hunt but I think that $300 a day for hunting hogs without a garantee at a shot is ridicoulous. Just about all the places on the planet that are charging that sort of fee for hunting hogs offers some sort of come back another day garantee if you do not get a shot.

There are plenty of places that offer that service. If your wanting to get those sort of rates more power to you. Hope you get it. But it won't be for me.

During the 2014 year we avg 6+ hogs per hunt. We only had two hunts where the hunters did not kill. The first one they missed 3 pigs and the 2nd hunt they missed 4 pigs. While I would love to boast a 100% kill rate I can only boast a 100% shot rate.
