The last two weeks have been pretty rough as far as trail cams go because I've had 2 quit on me in a very short amount of time. One of them was a Moultrie m-80 which was my favorite and lasted almost 3 seasons the other was a primos 35 ultra which was complete garbage because it's been sent back one time already and still didn't last a year. I'm wanting to buy one now and another later on. I've narrowed it down to two and would like peoples experience with the two I'm considering. The first one is a covert MP8 IR I've never had a covert and haven't really heard a whole lot about them. The second is a Moultrie M-880 infared.

The covert that I was looking at was a little over $100 and then I also saw some that were quite a bit more. Are the $100 cameras just as good as the more expensive ones?

I have 3 of the m-80s and love them. As you probably already know, the m-880 replaced them. I now own two of the m-880s. The m-880s are very similar to the m-80s with just a few differences.
Here's the scoop when comparing the two cams:
Positives: -has a built in system for adding a cable lock for security -has a PIN function for security -has two flash modes: one just like the m-80, one for longer distance shots which creates a tunnel like flash out to 90' -plot watcher functions are updated: you schedule specific times for the plot watcher function (ie 4pm-6pm). No need for plot watcher software downloads on computer as you view the plot watcher as still images
Negatives: -less options for image capture (ie you can set it to take one pic or two or two fast pics) -strap is not as functional as the old buckle strap on the m-80 -setup is slightly more confusing IMO, but still not as bad as others

Where's the best place to buy the M-880I. The cheapest I can find one is at academy.com and they want $150 which is more than what I am wanting to spend but I also realize that you get what you pay for. Are there any out there for around $100 that are infared and just as good as the M-880I?

I'd check ebay though. Here's one to your door for $113: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2014-Moultri...=item339878ff1b

One more thing on the m880:
Its predacessor (m80) has great battery life with the 8 AAs, but I think the m880 has even better battery life.

Yeah I have an M-880 now that I bought from the classifieds section here and I really like it I would just really like to have another that's infared since the one I have now has the LED flash and you are correct about battery life they are awesome when it comes to that. The last time I checked my camera it still had 74% battery life and it's been running on those same batteries since june.

I didn't realize they made the m880 in flash and IR. Mine is the IR and the one I linked from eBay is the IR I believe.

Yeah they have the M-880c and the M-880I the "C" model is color with flash and the "I" model it infared. I ended up going to academy today and just spending the money on a new 880 infared so hopefully it'll last at least 3 years like my M80 did.

It's the infrared but not the blackout like the m880i. Before you pop the box open in yours, check Dicks Sporting Goods, they had theirs on sale at our store here in Pensacola.

I've thought about going back to white flash in a couple cams. Looking back, my old white flash cams seemed to scare less bucks than the ir models I've had. Experimenting with black flash right now, but it's hard to get used to the lower quality, grainy pics. I guess that's what you get in return for stealth. CD.
