Me and my Marine friend just completed this just-for-fun update on a basic 60-plus year old SKS carbine...7.62x39 cal. The SKS was still encased in cosmaline when purchased.
We replaced the wood stock with a drop-in synthetic stock; bedded the action and floated the barrel. We placed a 45' tri-rail atop the receiver to accept a 3x9 scope, iron sights, red/green dot, and a red/green laser. lol
We mounted a quad-rail on the fore stock to accept a flashlight, horizontal grip, bi-pod, and other accessories. We also mounted a telescoping butt stock with a cheek piece.
It weighs right at 10.5 lbs.(w/bayonet and when loaded) We wanted a decent shooting platform with a little more punch (than a 5.56 NATO), only out to 250 yards...with an option for closer defensive shooting. The carbine groups 1.75" at 100 yards with cheaper ammo. We can fire the carbine platform either as a semi-auto or bolt action with our modification. Recoil is really light with the added weight. We also mounted a grenade launcher to the platform.
We might not need all the accessories but it sure was a lot of fun to do !
Next project...will be my Bushmaster AR 15 Optics Ready Carbine. I'll keep it much more basic and lightweight.
