I am deciding on on Lowes 18ft Roughneck boat. I am trying to decide if I need a 40 hp or up to 60 hp motor? Appreciate help! The boat weighs 778 lbs bare hull.

I'd put the largest rated motor on it. You don't have to ever give it everything it has but if needed, it's there. Also not as much wear n tear when running low rpms. Or at least highest I could afford.

The yamaha 70 is a good motor. Their 90 motor weighs a lot more and will only provide a little bit more speed. I've got one on my G3 and it's been great.

7 marine 557, I'd definitely would not get a tiller steer though.
I've got a 2 stroke 70 on my 16 ft G3. It runs out fast enough, I'd go with at least a 70 on an 18ft.

 I agree with what TDF says.I bought mine off of a lady,and that's what she had on it was the 75.Mine says 90 for the max.But I can load my down with the wife & kids & she'll get up & go..I've got my prop pitch just where she needs to be...

Is that Byrnes lake launch? Naw that's behind my camp.We call it hog pen slough.It's close to the gees bend launch.Its normally not that muddy, but this pic was took right after all that rain we had about a month back..

I have a 90hp on my 17.5 wareagle. Look at the boat rating and put whatever is max. You won't regret it.

This. And with a fin so you'll plane off quicker. Just get someone to put a plexiglass pane in the bottom so you can see where you're going cause that bow will be pointing straight up.

Appreciate all the advice. The boat is rated for a 75 hp Max and I want to keep the boat within a certain price range so I went with a 60 HP Mercury 4 Stroke. The Mercury has a 5 year warranty offered now and is more affordable than the Yamahas I was deciding between. The Yamaha's come with a 3 year warranty. From the research I have done the New Mercury 4 strokes are just as reliable as a Yamaha. I hope I have made the right choice.

Have you looked at Tohatsu? They have a 5 year warranty, also
