He's in a bottom. I'm on the same side of the road about 5 steps in, motionless. My buddy who is a great caller is working him from about 15 yards behind me. For about 90 minutes we play "phone tag" . About every twenty minutes my buddy hit box softly and would get a response. Sometimes the turkey would gobble after about twenty minutes if we hadn't called. This goes on for a while, about an hour and a half. By buddy gradually starts picking up the pace and slowly gets more aggressive calling. Finally we can tell he's getting closer. He had been hung up in the same spot about 125 yards away. Never getting closer. The aggressive calling is working and I can tell he's about fifty yards away, can't see him. He moving towards the road and I'm expecting him to come walking down the road right to my pointed barrell. All the sudden I could tell he crossed the road to go to the bottom on the other side. He answered, responded got closer and closer and never came. Once I knew he was gone my buddy hit the lynch box w a gobble and sure enough he was gone , he gobbled from abouts 100 yards down the other bottom.

Ok, this happened twice in one day with two different toms.

Any ideas? Did they see us? We're they looking for a hen? We did NOT have a decoy up.

My buddy is 75 and turkey hunted his whole life and is a fantastic hunter. He was at aloss as well.

MORE THEN LIKELY NOT GOING TO GET ONE TO CROSS A MAJOR ROAD. NOW A HUNTING CLUB DIRT ROAD YEA BUT LIKE A HIGHWAY, NOPE

I called one down a public dirt road before. He strutted and gobbled the whole way. Then he walked up the hill into the woods to us and my buddy killed him.

It's a deer club road. But I'm wondering why he came straight to us after an hour or so then changed directions. I'm thinking he looked to where the sexy hen should have been and when he didn't see her he got cold feet. Kind of like being at a singles bar....walk right to the pretty girl and turn away just before asking for that dance. Turkey needed some liquid encouragement.
