I got the mossberg 835 over the weekend. I shot it yesterday and 50 yds is automatic. My goal is to be able to feel comfortable at 60-70 yds if needed. I have a remington 1187 premiere I may sell that I got last year if semi auto is what you decide on.

I built a Texas gun a few years ago ... A benelli Nova.... That will kill a turkey at almost 80 yards... However, at less than 25 yards it can miss one as it is a quarter size pattern.

It may be possible, but just not ever gun out there will shoot that far.
Patterns will drop at those ranges. 60 and in I know my gun will kill. But the truth is most hunters don't know what there limits or capabilities are. Just make assumption off there tore up 30 yard patterns.

I have only shot it twice it kicks like a mule possibly hardest kicking gun I've ever shot. The 2 times at 50yds it did very well. I plan on trying different shells and chokes in the near future at 60-70yds can't spoil all the excitement in one day, plus if shot only a few times no bruised shoulder.

I don't really even know yet any suggestions for best 3 1/2 shell and choke combo would be appreciated. Yesterday I had remington nitro 4 shot.

Best gun I could think of to feel comfortable at 70 yards with turkeys would be a .243.

Could you post up a picture of your pattern at 50 yds with Remington Nitro #4s? Just wondering if your definition of "automatic" and mine might be different.

No one has mentioned thus far the recoil from the Mossies. I bought an 835 several years ago and promptly developed a flinch when pulling the trigger. The 870 kicks also, but not nearly as much as the 835. The 835 is a killing machine, but it does so on both ends.

What is a Texas gun and how do you build it? Sorry.. I should have said a gun built for Texas Turkey hunting... Have taken groups out for 9 or 10 years... Also would be a great pasture gun for here in Alabama. I added mercury recoil system, back bored, polished and lengthened forcing cone, added Rhino Choke and ported barrel as well... It may have been over kill... But like my Grandpa said... You can't take it w/ U when the final day comes ! It is a great gun and 3 1/2 she'll shock is non existent.
