Well, after a long season of chasing this nocturnal old man, he finally starts moving in daylight hours... ...and the neighbor killed him. Hoping to at least put my hands on the rack in the next few days.

Dang I hate that you didn't get him. It sucks when you put a lot of effort into a single deer and someone else gets him.

That's tough. Hate it, but congrats to the guy who got him.

I guess this is the first deer Ive really had my heart set on that I didnt get to sling lead at. Sure, Ive had other bucks on camera that I never saw again, but none that I had on camera with the frequency of this one. Ive had him on camera constantly in one small area from late September until last Friday. I knew where he preferred to bed, where he preferred to eat, and where he liked to travel. The biggest problem was he only moved between 8pm and 3am. Even in the preseason. I was overly anal about NOT hunting him if the wind wasnt right and always approached/hunted/left staying downwind. I resisted my urge to hunt him too much so that pressure didnt push him away. Still, I only got to see him with my eyes once. Back during bow season, I saw him and 2 small bucks cross a path about 100yds away from me at last light. They were leaving his bedroom and took a side trail instead of his normal route. More proof it wasnt meant to be.
The poor sucker didnt know February was no longer safe & got busted looking for love in the mid-day. The neighbors have a green field about 250yds across the property line. The buck clearly didnt read the no trespassing sign.

Tough to lose one like that to the neighbors. Hopefully he has offspring running around and you can get set up on one of them.

Really good buck. I hate to hear that. I don't know whats worse having one you're after and knowing someone killed him or him just disappearing and not knowing if he left or ventured out and someone else got him or what. I had more than 100 pics of a nice 8 that I was really wanting to get.He was on my cams constantly. Had several day light pics of him and around January 21 of last year he just diasappeared. Talked to two of the adjoining properties and neither killed him but haven't saw him sense. Here are 2 pics of him.
