300-400 lbs sand in the bed - over the axles. take it slow. If stick, higher gears. Auto - try 3 or 2. getting it going is easy - stopping not so much! This is what will bite you. Gear it down as much as you can.
IF it starts to get away from you, and in 4x4, just let go the steering wheel. no gas and NO BRAKES! It will right itself. Don't fight it. then EASE back into the gas (taking the wheel back, of course!)
use the curb or even grass edge. Don't spin the tires if at all possible. snow will actually help vs the slick packed snow/ice.
If you are spinning the tires - get out and toss out some sand.

The roads here are packed snow that has turned to solid ice. It is hard to drive anything but a steel tracked vehicle on ice, unless you have snow chains.

fat rats chance finding chains around here... only place I have even seen them advertised is O'Reilly's... Then, most probably wouldn't know how to put them on...

I can't see snow chains helping much at all on ice. There's a set in the shop at work but I doubt they would have fit my tires
We will burn that bridge when we get there

Traffic so bad I couldn't get there. He made it to his aunt's house. Truck did fine. .. made it everywhere easily. So I gave rides to stranded people in my part of hoover for 7 hours. I would guess there were 200 vehicles crashed or unable to navigate the hills. Took 30 folks home at least. I wasn't alone. .. lots of men with 4x4 trucks doing the same.

Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.
I'd rather be LOST in the woods than FOUND in the city.

the right chains work great on ice. They bite, just like crampons! But there is a trick to driving on chains. It is an art.

Most incidences take place at intersections......bump your car/truck into neutral as you approach a stop sign/light. It keeps you from fish-tailing/sliding as much when you stop. What?!?!!? That is the dumbest thing you could do, never put the vehicle in neutral, put it in a lower gear and let the engine help you slow down and be very very soft on the brakes. Sorry but yoteslayer is right. Putting it in a lower gear does more harm than good when trying to stop. I lived in Nebraska for 6 years and am very familier with driving in ice and snow. The reason for neutral is it keeps the wheels from pulling which fights against the brakes when they are being applied. Best thing to do is already be driving in a lower gear then shift to neutral and lightly pump the brakes when coming to a stop.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

12-15 psi gets maximum traction on ice, this is what i ran when i was in north dakota, also chains will make a huge difference.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
