I was extremely humbled this weekend. For many years I have only carried bullets in my gun with no extras in my fanny pack. Well, I will be changing that practice pronto. I went to my hunting property Saturday morning with my son. I dropped him off at his shooting house and proceeded to a ridge top stand with an old gas well pad covered in small pines and big hardwoods surrounding it on all sides. It was breaking day when I got out of the truck. So, I put my stand on my back and chambered a round in the .308 and started walking, briskly. Just 20 yards before reaching the gas well pad 3 deer jumped and ran down the ridge and stopped. In one motion I slung off the stand braced the rifle on top of it and found the biggest deer in the scope. All I had was a neck shot at 75yds. My gun is amazingly accurate so I never thought twice about the shot. Bang-flop! I went down to check the deer it looks at me so I put another round in the head. My gun only holds 3 bullets. If your counting I am down to 1 bullet. It is still very early so I proceed to my spot and decide I could see better by just using the top part of my climber as a seat. I am only there 30 minutes when I hear a deer do what I call a short snort, which tells me another animal spooked it. I hear the deer trotting towards me and see that it's a doe. That was good because the first was a decent buck. She closes to 15 yds and I pull off the DRT. Well as soon as she stops kicking a big boar runs in from where she came from. He is right by the doe! I was thinking, he wants the deer. I pick up what looks like a lighter knot and throw it at him. He bristles and turns to face me. I don't think he ever saw me and he was up wind. He starts walking back to the gas well pad right by me. He gets up to the edge of the pad and stands there for an eternity, 3-5 min. I was absolutely blown away. So, lesson learned! Carry extra bullets!!!!!! The next time I go hunting I will look like a Mexican ban dido from a Clint Eastwood movie!! LOL

I always have a shell holder on my stock. This way I always have extra shells with my gun. Watched my dad who had an odd caliber (257 Roberts Long Action) get to the woods one time and realize he forgot his shell. Not a round that you could just run to the locale mom and pop shop in the country and pick up.

I unloaded my gun on a big buck last year only to walk within 100 yards of him and watch him laying down for 2-3 minutes.It was a helpless feeling that'll never happen again.Tracked that deer over 2 miles and never found him.Prolly a 130"+ buck.

At least yall were not as stupid as me. I shot a great buck (biggest I have seen in Bama while hunting) in a clear cut. I didn't see him drop or run off so I went looking for him. I found him still kicking and I was 10 yards from him. I had the extra ammo but I didn't think he needed another round. When I got back with the ATV he was gone. Tracked him about 2 miles where he laid in a mud hole in a creek and nothing to be found from there.

I thought he was done for. If ever in that situation Ill add another in him. Heck if he is big enough Ill put a second one in him even if he is not kicking.

Done that this year with hogs. I shot and missed one they all took of running and shot one dropped it and it was still kicking so I shot it again. I only put 3 shells in my gun and never really thought id need more. So as I'm putting my stand on my back I'm probably a mile and a half from the truck another one runs out and I just holler and it runs off. Sketchy feeling walking through Bankhead at dark thirty with no light
