I find several of these small snakes each year. Found this one about 12 inches long and as big around as an ink pen. Thanks for the help.

Ain't but two kinds of snakes here on ALdeer - Giant King Hooded Spittin Copper Water Rattlin' Two Steppin Fer 'de Lance and Dead Ones.
Kinda tough to tell what that one is based on a still photo.

Yep its dead. the cats take care of most of them. I find about one every 3 weeks dead in the summer.

Looks like a color variation of a grass snake. I catch and move a pile of em away from the buildings here at work every spring. They emit a foul odor when you pick em up. Does it slither about on the ground, have slits for pupils and a forked tongue? If so....eradicate immediately!

Looks like a rat snake. That's a baby. They get up to 5 or 6 feet. You're gonna have to move.

Dang I hope not but I think you nailed it. Never occured to me from the shot from the top. They are REALLY cool snakes. Not too many around anymore.
On a related note, do yall know the hognose, both eastern and western have a mild venom? They are rear fanged though so since they are so small they arent really a threat to humans, just frogs and lizards. Plus they have to kinda "chew" a little to inject. There were a few folks on reptiles forums I was on when I still had snakes that tested the venom on themselves for research. Its causes a reaction much like a bee string is all.

That is a dekay's Brown snake. Not a hognose or rat snake. It's an adult.
