We recently had our property logged and the loggers have left giant piles of branches roughly 10 foot high. Some piles are located in great places overlooking our food plots. With no trees left for tree stands ,we have climbed on top of these piles and cleaned out a place to sit. I find myself spending more time looking around me for snakes. Will snakes climb up into these piles? If so it looks like tripods are on order.

Snakes go wherever the rodents go. If a rat chooses a brush pile, "jake" will go in there to get him. The only caveat to that is you don't have to worry abot them in the cold. However, I wouldn't want to be there on a day like today. Starts off will a good frost at 38 degrees (no snake movement), but then it warms up to 68 (snakes gonna move to sun themselves and hunt). Like you, I'd be spendin more time looking down than out! I can't stand snakes so if this were on my property, I'd be making a trip to Academy for a stand!

You better believe they'll climb. I am concerned about EVERY pile of limbs I am around. I don't think (but don't know) Timbers are climbers and I don't think mocs would climb too high. I would put coppers in the climbing group and many of the non-poisonous snakes like to climb. Rat snakes... love to climb. Funny story.... my cousin is a LifeFlight pilot and was 500' up and headed to an emergency when he looked down at his feet and saw a snake crawl into his instrument panel. Not wanting to chance what a snake could do to the safety of his helo and that the snake might interfere with patient care, he kept his head and called for a backup helo to make the call/fight and called for an emergency landing. They landed in a field and had to tear that helo apart and finally got up with the snake. A rat snake approx about 3' long. Every time they would grab the snake, he'd pull away so they finally had to kill the snake to remove it. To answer your question... on warm days, I'd worry.

My buddy bought some clearcut property a few years back and in the process of clearing roads and fields we had to move quite a few piles and tops left . We killed a lot of cotton mouths if they were close to water and only a few rattlesnakes up on the ridges. I'd stay out of those tops.
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers.......... Si Robertson

That's what I thought until I came face to face with a juvenile timber about 10 feet up a sweetgum. He was so close to my face I could see the vertical pupils and his little forked tongue tasting the air to try and figure out what the heck was staring at him. My descent was accelerated! I needed to work on a ladder stand in that tree, so I shook him out into a big cardboard box for relocation-- I didn't want to worry about having him underfoot while I was working.

I've seen corn snakes climb pine trees.
If one can do it, any of them can.
