i was sitting over some white oaks this am, and a decent eight walked in. i came to full draw waiting on a shot. i heard another deer coming in so i waited, and it was a good heavy rack deer. i shot him at about 15-18 yrds and when i released, my string hit my facemask. first time that's ever happened to me. anyway i hit him low and he ran directly behind the tree i was in. he bedded down three yards behind the tree, but i couldn't get another shot. after five min. he got up and walked another five yards or so and layed down again. still straight behind the tree where i couldn't shoot. after another 5-10 min he got up and started walking again. i was freaking out, and i leaned way out from the tree and shot at him walking straight away at about 20 yrds. i'm pretty sure i hit him somewhere in the back end that time. when i shot i lost my balance and he took off running so i couldn't tell for sure. oh crap i've got that feeling again. i'm gonna go back at 3 this pm with my bro. and see what i can find. there was a pile of blood at both bedding spots and no arrows. i think i saw five on one side so i think he's a 9 point.
i don't pray for material things, but i "HOPE" i find him.


i never imagined a deer could bring a grown man to his knees, but we were on our last leg looking for this deer when i finally found it. i just about broke down when i found him. i didn't want to leave a deer like this in the woods to waste.
i had looked for another 3 hours this am when i finally just walked up on him with no blood or anything. he was in the thickest crap possible.
i hit him low behind the shoulder and in the left ham. he had some ground shrinkage also, but i'm well pleased with the cutters on both sides.

Good Luck. What time did you shoot?

You'll find him. If there are "piles" of blood in both spots, he won't be far. No animal can live with blood draining out of their bodies. Don't second guess yourself on the second shot. All of us here would have tried to get another arrow in him too. Bet he's dead within 100 yards. Good luck!

Youll find him! I hit one low and a little far back one time and it did the same thing, bedding in sight several times before finally moving out of sight. I couldn't get another arrow in him, so I slipped out at 9am and came back late that afternoon. The deer was dead as a hammer in a creek 100yrds from where I last saw him.

I liver shot a buck once that acted the same way. He got up and took a few steps and laid back down 4 or 5 times. It was open woods so he never got out of sight, but the ordeal lasted a couple of hours before he died.

did you find both arrows?

Shot him at 7:30 the first time and something till 8 the second time. I didn't find either arrow. I actually thought about trying to take a pic with my phone of him,but I didn't wanna spook him. I hope that's not the last chance at a pic. I actually could have shot him in the hind quarter the first time he bedded, but I thought he was gonna lay there and die. I could NOT shoot him from the hips up. I was shaking bad with Him under the tree like that.

I hope you find him, you could have put him down very quickly by hitting the femoral artery on his hind quarter.

If he laid down that quickly after the shot then I'd bet he's hit pretty hard. Hope you find him and I bet you will.


Absolutely. If he's already wounded and acting like that I'd put another one in him anyway I could. And although I'd never recommend it as a primary shot hit's back in the hams like that can be very lethal. Big veins and arteries back there.

If you hit him in the hind end on the 2nd shot, there's a good change you got the femoral artery. If that's the case, it will be easy to find him!!

Sounds like you did everything right. Especially leaving him alone throughout the day. I've hit a couple real low in the brisket area and they acted like you described. He most likely went just a little ways and layed down for good.

well, we just got back. tracked him about 1/4-1/2 mile till it got basically dark and the blood was petering out. tracked him to an open pasture and he went right across the middle of it. we liked to have never picked it back up on the other side, but we did and continued on till dark.i definately hit him twice because there was two blood trails about a foot and a half apart. lots and lots of single drops after we got about 200 yards in. i hit him just behind the brisket and in the ham as bad as i hate to say it. i thought for sure i'd hit his heart the way he was acting at first. the worst part of the whole deal is i could have shot him through both hind quarters while he was on the ground if i'd have know all this was gonna happen. i've never had a deer bed down like that and not got him. i'm sick, think i'll sleep-in in the morning and go look again.
i shoulda took a pic of him when i had the chance. i coulda reached way out around the tree and got one i know.

That stinks. Maybe you can come up with somehing tommorrow.Do you have access to a tracking dog?

I would definitely go back in the morning and take a dog if possible. That deer should be dead by the way you said he acted.

it sounds like that deer is suffering an agonizing death, walking around the woods looking like a pin cusion with arrows sticking out of him. hopefully some other hunter will see him and take him out of his misery.
