My buddy called me today about a cow question, told him to FaceTime me for more accuracy. He did, we got the problem resolved and he’s good to go. That got me to thinking. A lot of folks that’s “farming” now days wouldn’t have ever made it before these smart phones came out. World of knowledge and how to now days, take a video and send it to the vet, FaceTime and show them as well. When I cut my teeth, you had paw paw, a neighbor and a lot of figure it out yourself. Few books here and there and a man could go to farming. Now it seems technology has came along and folks are pros at farming. lol. I had to learn what not to do, before I knew what to do. Roll on with it is all I can say. 😁.

I was exposed to gardening at a young age. How we ate. I was never exposed to cattle, or deer hunting. But was to chickens. I grew up when those things were becoming less mainstream and more outlying. So I missed a whole lot I wish now I'd learned. I don't think many saw us ever needing to roll back to survival skills just to eat. We have lived the good life for decades.

People have lost that knowledge. And it sucks. So many are now becoming aware of the garbage and chemicals in our food, much less the cost. And we are trying to re-learn those skills. So don't judge too harsh on those who are at least trying to get back to the way it should be. At least they are trying. They need encouragement and help so they can learn and pass it down to future generations.

Not judging per say, google and you tube is more useful than a college education to me. It just is hard to fathom the amount of people that has to have social media to make it. I was fortunate, I had men and women both in my family that had common sense and work ethic. It passed onto me I think. I always had respect for older farmers that made it before cell phones became popular. Same for carpenters and other trades.

Things change over time too.......Probably not too many granddaddy's that taught about no-till practices or rotational grazing, etc......The internet has been a game changer for being able to access knowledge and learn

I started a photography business in the 80s and knew nothing even though I’d been a photographer a long while. Became friends with a local B&W fashion shooter. Met him thru the local PPA after being given his number to borrow a camera. I had a shoot and dropped mine but needs one asap. Henley me borrow 10 k in equipment to get thru the day as I had a new system being overnighted. We became friends and he was the wedding guru in the shoals during that era. Having to Know how to shoot because film didn’t teach by chimping

I converted to digital beginning in Oct of 2001. Yep a month after 9/11. If not for rob Galbraith forum I’d still be stuck. The earlybdaysbifndigitalnwere the wild Wild West and full of hurdles.

By 06-07 digital had put a hurting on old timers. The business was filled with of newbies and chaotic times. I closed up in 2010 not willing to keep fighting with the chaos.

Technology changed numerous businesses. Music is not the same along with news sources and magazines are drying up.

But yeah the internet is full of experts and everybody is after the short route.

There is a lot of bull shit on the internet too. You learn to filter through.

I could go the rest of my life without thinking about sewing up the last prolapsed cow with the homade needle and braided nylon string. Or cutting yearling bulls in the hallway of a barn That were too big to handle without a shoot. That idea sucked bad. I forget how many times we got mowed down that day. Grab a cow with a nose clamp and dehorn. Always amazed me even with blood stopper some just squirt every heartbeat for a while. I don’t miss those days. Honestly I could see where if we had smart phones and social media on some practices we did we’d probably be in jail now with the way society is. My heart goes out to all the folks still in the game. It’s becoming more brutal every year seems like. Less and less profit margin and more and more hoops to jump through.

I guess we all have the stuff that we are good at. What amazes me, is even with all of the information floating around the web, I still have a pretty good percentage of guessing the folks who grew up on a farm. It teaches life and troubleshooting skills like no other and it sticks out when talking to folks. On another note, my wife was watching one of the investigator shows (maybe first 48 or something similar) and I mentioned that they almost always solve the crime due to idiots posting on social media and that if social media disappeared tomorrow, they would have to find the few investigators left that have solved crimes before social media to retrain everyone. If you really think about it, that would be the same for the bulk of the overall work force.
