Just dropped of my A Bolt 708 to have it cut to 20" and threaded. This rifle has a whole lot of sentimental value to me
and I hope I don't hate it after this. Just having it shortened from 22 to 20.

Also having my 7wsm cut to 18" and threaded.
Obviously these will both be running suppressed for the rest of their lives.

It'll work out. Which suppressor are you running?

I would cut the 7 08 to 18" and the Whizzum to 20"

I need to get my M700 in 243 cut, but I share your concerns. The little rifle will put 20 shots in an inch and has great velocity with it's 24 inch barrel, BUT I'd like to suppress it... Decisions.

We have three rifles in 7mm-08 that are 17" or shorter. They all kill deer really well.

I couldn’t bring myself to cut down and alter the rifles I grew up hunting with. Still torn over it because I won’t shoot them as much anymore.

I went slightly cheaper on mine on yhm lower end and wish I wound have spent $300-400 more on one of their higher end ones or ones mentioned above.

That's a personal choice, but a physical change doesn't have to remove the memories. I try not to get emotional over replaceable things. I might kill a deer at some point with my Dad's Remington 742 or my son's 762, but the scopes will be different if I do.

One of the rifles we recently had modified started life as a Tikka LSS in 308 Win. I killed a few deer, a ton of pigs, an axis, and a scimitar oryx with it. One of my friends took a great South Texas buck with it also. Took it out of that stock, put it in a McMillan to fit my wife, and she shot a deer and her blue wildebeest. Loaned it to a friend in the McMillan stock, and his daughter killed a deer with it.

It came home, then went to Isaac Gallagher to be rebarreled. It is back home now with a threaded Lilja barrel, chambered in 257 Roberts, ready to kill some more critters. We are excited to see what is next for that action. The original stock is now on a 25-06 Tikka that I rebuilt and sold to a good friend after I killed a few with it. He is trying to keep his 15 year old son from claiming it now. I bet I know who wins, so I am already trying to get another 25-06 ready after they figure out who gets to hunt with that one.

Most of our rifles have had some modification. I look at it this way - If the stock broke, you would replace or repair it, right?

Why is barrel length or thread any different?

I just sent 3 of my old favorites to Isaac to be threaded or shortened and threaded. Didn't want to sell them, but wasn't using them as they could not be suppressed.

Kimber 84M in 257 Roberts, cut to 18", thread and Cerakote (Pigs, deer, including 2 bucks in 2 days/South Alabama)
Montana 1999 in 25-06, thread and Cerakote (2017 mule deer in Utah, nephew's first Texas buck)
Montana 1999 in 264 Win Mag, thread (first buck over 180", pigs, 2 South Texas bucks in 4 days, and none ever took a step)

Yes, I am a caliber junkie. Last count, I have killed pigs, deer, and other hoofed ungulates with 20 different centerfire calibers. That doesn't count skwerls or birds, but I have killed deer and hogs with 12, 16, and 20 gauge shotguns.

I’d definitely go longer on the 7wsm and shorter on the 08.

Something with alot of sentimental value wouldn’t get altered at all. Some don’t have a problem with it, but I won’t do it.

For me, there is no way I would have done that. Just my personal preference. YMMV

What are the chances of doing something like this and it totally changes how the rifle shoots? Has anyone modified one like this and turned a real shooter into a dog?

Or just leave the 7WSM alone.
