It was time for my every 2 year defrost of my old 1960 model Hotpoint frig. I gave $100 for it in about 1983. My wife and I used it a couple of years when we first got married. We built this house in '91 and it's been sitting in that spot, doing it's job, since the day we moved in. You can see some repairs I've made over the years , added a aluminum brace , racks held up by zip ties , crisper glass taped together. I suspect it'll be working fine after I'm gone. Wish I'd taken a before pic , ice was pushing out of the freezer compartment. Most younger folks have never had the pleasure of defrosting .

That picture brings back childhood memories from the 1960s and I bet you get many more years out of that fridge! Those old fridges don't have any 'quit' built into them. I remember having similar ones when I was growing up and also remember the fixes that my Daddy made occasionally. We had Norge and Philco that I distinctly remember and maybe a GE. A common theme with them was that the handles were made of pot metal and would eventually break but the cooling system seemed to live on forever. And I'll never forget the ice trays with the lever in the center of the tray for busting the cubes out. Such a simpler life back then.

I got a 30 year old Hotpoint chest freezer that is due for a defrost but I'm scared that if I defrost it that it will decide to stop working.

I've talked about this with my kids.

The house I grew up in had the same Fridge, Freezer, Washer and Dryer, etc. They lasted forever.

I have a GE my Grandma bought in 1943 that was sill working last time I checked.

In another case of "dont make them like they used to".......... Steel mailboxes. The large commercial box in front of my office has been there probably since the early 80s. An over hanging skidder tire on a semi trailer took it off the post at about 45mph yesterday afternoon. Dang thing really don't look that bad, could straighten it out if I wanted. Best thing is I've got a camera watching it, and could clearly see it happen and got the name of the company and the DOT number off the side

Go for it.
That's always my concern too. We live in the country , therefor, power interruptions and our Co-op has occasional outage for upgrades and such. Point being , it survives them . I fired the old Hotpoint up about 30 minutes ago and it cooling down nicely . I'll give it a little while longer then reload it.

I have had my grandmothers freezer for over 30 years, it looked worn out when I got it, not sure what year it was built, it sat in my garage for 20years and looked alot like yours with external rust. A few years ago we were moving to another place and the only spot for it was in the laundry room and we couldn't hide it, I sanded and painted it with the rustoleum appliance paint , at Lowe's and it looks brand new. The rustoleum appliance paint is pretty bad ass stuff, hard as nails after it dries, but very loud smell.

I like that ice maker 2dogs.

A friend of mine finally got rid of an old Philco a few years ago. It was old enough that the door latched and the top corners were not corners at all. My brother has an old coke box from the 1950s with the rounded top and a glass door to pull your drink out of. I have one from the 70s with the glass door, just not the rounded top.

My current one. Knock on wood, it's been a good one.

My grandparents had a 1950’s/60’s era refrigerator in their basement they bought new. It was still there running strong when my dad and his brother sold the house after they had passed around 2005’ish. I’d bet it’s still there. I wish I had it.

How timely and appropriate this post it because I'm envious! We have the same refrigerator at our cabin and at the beach house. What are the chances? Herein lies the problem: we had to replace the water inlet valve or some kinda housing at the cabin because water stopped getting to the ice maker and also the stupid water dispenser in the door (that we've somehow become incredibly dependent on!). Thurman's in Fort Payne made a service call for the diagnosis $130. Ordered part and return service call $350. Dude knew what he was doing. Exact same problem with the beach house! The cabin frig was installed in 2019, 7 years old. I bet this one here at the beach is not that old and it has a missing crisper and shelf which is going to cost $250 minimum. I think I just answered my own question and need to just shop for a new frig. These stupid things are just dang disposable. I'm getting madder the more I think about it! These manufacturers do not test for use whatsoever. Scams, all of 'em.

No they don’t. Got my grandmothers 40 year old stand up feeezer. Still going strong

Appliance manufacturers shouldn't be allowed to sell any unit to the general public for the first 5 years it's in production. Guvment housing should be the test lab for for that duration and anything that survives The Projects for 5 years is bound to be a viable appliance.

Appliances and H-Vac units are disposable garbage now.. if you get 10 years out of any of them, you are lucky.

I wish I had thought to take pictures of these. My wife's grandfather died a few years back and he had lived in the same house he built in the 60's.

Don't know the brand but he had an ancient fridge that sat outside on the dirt behind the detached laundry room. 100% in the elements 24/7 and that thing was still chugging along keeping his cokes cold when he passed. The body of the fridge had holes rusted through it.

In his unconditoned celler he had a giant chest freezer that probably was bought when they built the house. It was still working as well. That cellar used to flood a couple times a year and it survied having water half way up the body multiple times a year.
