The 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is widely considered an exceptionally reliable truck, frequently surpassing 250,000 to 300,000 miles with basic care. Because it was built before GM introduced complex active fuel management (AFM/cylinder deactivation) systems, its mechanical platform is remarkably robust and simple to work on.
It's got 270 horsepower, which aint bad either.

Yeah, that AFM PHUCKING SUCKS!!!! My 2019 Silverado is sitting dead in the driveway with a dropped lifter because of that chit.

Yeah, that AFM PHUCKING SUCKS!!!! My 2019 Silverado is sitting dead in the driveway with a dropped lifter because of that chit. One of the first things I did when I had my 2018 Sierra was deactivate the AFM. Never had a problem. Now the transmission was another story, certified pos of a transmission.

I saw a black stepside (98-99?) with a 5.7 vortec in it on FB. Needed a transmission I think. Great looking truck. I ran standard cab short bed 4WD GM trucks for a long time. Loved them. Been in crew cabs since and would like to go back. Don’t want another project tho

That gen GM truck may be the best all around 1/2 ton ever made. You see a lot of them still on the road . That little V8 is a long life workhorse.

I’ve got a 95 Tahoe with the 5.7 (350) and 4L60 (formerly known as the 700R4) transmission. She’s pushing 300,000 miles with no leaks and no oil consumption. She’s probably the most reliable vehicle I own, and requires only basic maintenance. When some repair is required I can do it myself. There’s nothing on that truck that I can’t fix.
I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

I have a 2015 Silverado sitting in the yard, cheap plastic $5 lifter tray allowed one of the non-AFM lifters to spin 1/4 turn in the block and ruined the camshaft. $7K fix because of $5 parts.
