It made me chuckle coming from one thread where a guy got fined $25k for not leashing his dog, then coming to another thread where a guy got fined $5k and someone says at least 5 times that. And that was the argument I made the other day, so many people somehow have so much money that fines often just aren’t enough to deter people anymore.

I agree with you though. That’s not “my family was hungry and I took one” that’s just straight up flagrant poaching. You’d probably get $1000 fine just for being caught without the corn add-on for 2 kernels of old August corn sitting under a leaf. $5k isn’t really enough.


That being said the guy is going back to jail for other reasons and probably for a long time, so they probably figure they are never ever getting any more money than what they recover auctioning his seized stuff.


On the topic of over the limit vs night though.. while I would never state it as a “fact”, because I don’t have the numbers.. it’s plausible.
Before the last few years of game check at least, I’m pretty sure a lot of the guys in my club carried a harvest record, killed a buck, wrote it down, took the deer home/to processor then promptly threw that piece of paper away and printed a new blank one. You had 24 hours to report it after all. If you were inspected, you had all you needed to be “legit”, if you weren’t inspected you were scot-free.

It always irked me because the club had a strict 2 doe limit and would fine you quick if you killed a third one, or an undersized deer, but no one cared at all if you killed 6 bucks.

How many guys do you think are out there like this one that just blatantly go around night hunting??.....It’s way, way less the number of guys who will shoot 2 bucks in the same afternoon or shoot a 4th and not check it……I have folks tell me about it all the time when I’m tracking……Last year wasn’t as bad but the year before that I think I had 9 tracks where someone shot two bucks on the same hunt.......I'm sure there's no actual data on it but if there was it wouldnt even be close

Alabama doesn't put high priority on wildlife and fines for game and fish violations. In say Kansas those fines would probably be 100k and he'd get a few years in the big house. Several years ago I read a story about a poacher in Kansas who shot a big buck road hunting. When they got finished with him it was 10k in fines, for one buck .

I don't see the big issue with two bucks in one day, or even three. So long as you don't shoot four, it shouldn't matter. Just my opinion, but three dead deer in one day is the same as three dead spread out over two months

And there’s no way that the cost of the investigation was covered by the fines.

I understand where you’re coming from but right now the bag limit is one buck per day……and a dead buck counts just the same whether it was illegally killed at night or illegally killed over the limit

I'll be honest. If I'm hunting this coming season on my own property, and a 120" buck comes in, I'm shooting it, and while I set there giving it time and a 140" walks out, I'm gonna wad his butt up too🤣.

Guaranteed. Might’ve paid for the gas used in the GWs truck and might’ve paid a very small portion of his salary during the time he was investigating him. Like I’ve said. A complete joke and nothing in the way of a deterrent.

I agree with shootmiss. 3 dead bucks are 3 dead bucks. Doesn’t really matter from a herd or resource mgmt perspective if the hunter kills them over 3 months or shoots them all in a 3 min span. As long as it’s only 3 bucks per season, it shouldn’t matter when the licensed hunter elects to kill those 3 legal bucks. That said, it is the current law and should be adhered to and enforced, but that’s not saying that it’s not a stupid regulation that should be revised or changed.

That guy from Florida that capped two in one afternoon on his last day before going back home may have never shot that second one otherwise……A lot of this is happening during a short time period during the rut when there is much more opportunity to shoot multiple bucks....A one buck per day rule makes sense when buck populations are already struggling

Yep, the rules could be greatly simplified. 3 deer per year, period. We'd still have outlaws and always will, just like now and nothing would change.

One per day is pretty simple.....Very little math involved

All jokes aside, the fines for that case is absolutely ridiculous.

I’d imagine if adhered to the one buck a day helps protect younger age class bucks as well
