Hi guys. I feel like someone will have some insight for me on this. I have been diagnosed with a dilated aorta (4.8 cm), and I had a calcium score that is high (800+ total and one vessel is over 500 and another over 300). I wonder if anyone has had experience with this type of heart diagnosis and what I have to look forward to. I had an echocardiogram, that identified the aorta, then a stress test that I did well on, and a calcium scoring test. The stress test was good but the other two have shown issues.
I've changed my diet substantially, quit smoking, I'm pretty active already, I'm not overweight taking a statin to control my ldl and a beta blocker to control BP. Tell me what you know, please.

I spent 6 hours in the ER with my wife last night due to Palpitations causing dizziness, headache, chest pains and nausea. She has been waiting for here 2 heart ablation since November..... she called the Cardiologist at 830am yesterday and they still have not returned her call....

I have heard many people talk about not taking statins but I'm new to this heart stuff and I don't know what the alternative is. My new cardiologist found the aortic aneurysm a few weeks ago and wanted me on them immediately. After my calcium score he immediately doubled the statin dose. I haven't had any side effects but I'm not sure where to go from here. Been healthy all my life and now I find this out. Just looking for some insight from people who have these issue or are familiar. Maybe I'm the only one with this combo, but I doubt it.

Statins are awful. If a doctors first step is a statin I’d find another doctor

Put me on the no statin side. Were killing me. Been off for 2 years. Will never take another one. They gave me my money back when I had the calcium test. Too high to score. Just said over 1000.

I've taken statins before and had no ill effects. Last year my BP had gone down so my doc took me off the BP meds and I quit taking the statin then also. Put me on the no statin side. Were killing me. Been off for 2 years. Will never take another one. They gave me my money back when I had the calcium test. Too high to score. Just said over 1000. What are you doing about the calcium score over 1000? None of my business I know but I don't have history of this in my family and don't have friends that have dealt with any of this. I'm only 55.

You don’t have a dilation you have a significant aortic aneurysm that is almost to the surgical threshold in size, which is generally 5cm
I would be more concerned about that than your calcium score, which is also concerning but takes a back seat to the aneurysm which could rupture and you bleed out internally

I would be more concerned about that than your calcium score, which is also concerning but takes a back seat to the aneurysm which could rupture and you bleed out internally The cardiologist said that if it reaches 5.5 cm, I'll need surgery. I have some plaque buildup in my arteries but like I said, my stress test went very well. By the way, I appreciate everyone's comments.

My wife has that same condition; it was diagnosed about 5 years ago. They monitor it with an annual electrocardiogram and CT scan.
The number to determine possible intervention can vary depending on your physical size; my wife is petite so hers would be different from yours. She is doing well, so far; but her BP has to be managed a lot. Her Dr. wanted to keep it under 130/80 because high BP puts cumulative stress on the aneurism over time. She is vary active and works out 2-3 times a week. Though he did not want her to lift to heavy. She is 75.
We both use UAB; they are excellent. I would HIGHLY recommend their cardio practice. Don't know much about Simon Williamson; I assume they use Princeton??

They are at Princeton. I've been using Dr. Kirby for years, as he is a close friend. He is there too. He said no restrictions other than I can't lift anything over 100lbs. I guess I will have to get help dragging deer out of the woods from now on.

I’m anti statins but also wouldn’t recommend immediately going against your doctor’s orders. Get fanatical with diet and exercise to start chipping away at those medications. 55 is too young to spend a lifetime on statins.
It takes real hard work to reverse all the damage we do to ourselves in the first half century.
