I told my boys when they got from work today to pull weeds in the back yard. Well I got home and they were just starting. No problem. I told them I’d help and get it knocked out. We get after it and in a little bit one of my boys says “dad, come look at this bug”. I told him to get after it and forget the bug. He insisted and said it looked like a wasp. I go over to where he’s at and he is on all fours, leaning over the biggest yellow jacket nest I’ve ever seen. Thank God they didn’t come out. They got a good 2-3 gallon drink of gasoline.

I don’t care how expensive gasoline gets. I’m always a buyer when it comes to pouring it into a yellow jacket nest.

Glad no one was hurt. I thought this was going to be about a snake. Almost got bite by a copperhead pulling some weeds around my peas last year.

A couple years ago I was walking out two dogs in the woods on an old 4wheeler trail. Dogs were off the leash but maybe 10 yds in front of me. One of them stirred up a jacket nest and I walked right into the swarm not knowing until the first one hit me. I took off running and those things chased me for I know 50 yds or more. I would up with 11 stings out of that deal.

Dad was pulling weeds in the garden years ago and got 'stung' by a small cottonmouth. Went to the shed to get a shovel, killed it and then went to the ER/hospital for 3 days. Nasty looking fingers with swelling up his arm but managed to keep all his digits. Gots to be careful diggin'em weeds!!

I guess Im just lucky. Running a Lawn Maintenance business for over 30 years Ive run nest over with mowers and used the weed eater right on top of nest many many times. Never been stung til late August into all of September. Many of my Lawn Service friends tell me thats their experience also.
