Had a first the other day when reloading some 10mm. New starline brass. Nosler 180 JHP over Longshot and Fed LPP. Normally will run a batch on my dillon 550, but wanted to do 50 for field purposes that were individually weighed and loaded. Doesn't take long with the new auto-dispense powder measures. RCBS carbide resizing die set and dillon taper crimp. While the brass is new, I still follow the process of resizing, belling, etc..
One thing I noticed when loading a batch individually, the majority will resize/seat the same but once in a while there will be one that seems easier or harder to size/seat. When checking COLs for consistency, noticed one or two that were over by a good .010. One was way off. Ran it through the seater die again and no change in COL, no abnormal case bulge. Adjusted the die and it was obvious this bullet required more to seat. Decided to remove the bullet using kinetic puller and examine the case. Rapped the puller a couple times, bullet didn't move much. Rapped it harder a couple times and what looked like the bullet finally coming out turned out to be the lead core. The jacket stayed in the case. The lead core literally separated from the jacket and popped out. The jacket didn't look like it had moved at all. At that point I just set the case aside and will figure out a way to remove the jacket and examine the case.

Man that’s messed up. Sounds to me like the lead core is moving inside the jacket. I think I’d contact Nosler on this.

Another suggestion…measure the bullet diameters. Years ago I got a batch of bullets from another manufacturer for 45 acp that measured to a different diameter than what was printer on the boxes. Boxes clearly said .452, and these were .450. When I put the bullet on the belled case mouth, the bullet fell almost out of sight down to the powder. I called the manufacturer, and was told my calipers were probably the problem. I could’ve used them with brass which had cannelured ring, but I chunked them.

I suspect the case. Starline brass advertises higher velocities because the cases are thicker and heavier. I've seen this when reproducing loads developed using one type of brass then switching to starline. As noted, most of the cases when sizing required similar effort. A very small number required what felt like less or more effort. This was one of those circumstances that probably required more effort to size.
In this case I was individually measuring the COLs for each round and noticed the anomaly. Had I been running these through my dillon for quantity, probably wouldn't have been caught and a subsequent FTF because the bullet was way over the recommended COL.
