New aluminum facility is staffing up in Bay Minette,AL. Looking for engineers, QC, operators, maintenance, safety etc. it’s a full plant stand up and staffing. Ads everywhere 6-8 weeks ago. It’s huge. I know we get a lot of the co tractors working out there right now shopping with us.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
My phone screen does not always work right, usually a lot of misspelled words....

Wasn’t there an aluminum plant built down that way about 15yrs ago and closed their doors not too long after starting up? I think it was thyssencrump. Maybe that was a steel mill.

I know this doesn’t help your current situation but I was laid off from the mines back in 2003 after putting in 8 years. I thought I would retire from there and was devastated. I took a “temporary” job as a scaffold builder laborer. I didn’t even know what scaffolding was other than what I had seen the amigos using to brick houses. I got a crash course and chased shutdowns building scaffolds in paper mills, power plants, etc… When the mines called me back a year later, I turned them down. That “temporary” job has me working on my 24th year, making more than I ever would have dreamed of making in the mines. Of course I’m not building scaffolds anymore. Too old and broke up and was smart enough to learn everything I could and move up. I’m in sales/estimating now. Getting laid off turned out to be one of the best things to happen to me. I know you don’t see it right now, but God has a plan for you and your wife. This didn’t catch Him by surprise. I’ll be praying for you and your wife.

I hate this for those of yall affected. I've always been a big BFG fan. However, I've read a bunch about how the QC on the tires have gone way down. Can't get them balanced, weird wear patterns, bad vibrations etc. The only BFG tires ive ever had came as OEM equipment on a Tahoe i bought in 98. Worst tires ive ever had on a vehicle. Started vibrating as soon as i hit 65 mph and no amount of balancing would fix it. Took them off at 25K miles and swapped to Michelin and problem was solved. Hate it for the folks affected by this and wish them the best.

I can’t say much more than that, but when it’s so bad you can’t pay the bills, this is what happens. This post is not meant negatively towards any single person.

DGAMBLER Uniroyal Goodrich in Opelika was overrunning our schedule, scrap was down and quality was up. We were closed due to our mix of tire codes. The union and plant manager told corporate that we needed to have larger tire codes than 15-16” tires. This was right after Michelin purchased us. Corporate told the plant manager that they purchased us to supply the replacement market. Lo and behold China flooded the market with cheap 15-16” tires. The righting was on the wall after that. When they finally made the announcement it wasn’t 2 months later several came through and said they made the wrong decision. So be it. I and so many others are better off. The only negative is I needed 14 months to draw my retirement. Former Quality Leadhand from Opelika BFG. Good luck to all of you. The best thing is all of my coworkers that transferred to BFG4 will draw their retirement.

Companies overseas are flooding the markets with tires and when you create the volume they do, it pulls the price down and eventually the costs will catch up. Our plant is 80 yrs old. So you can’t get the efficiency out of it like an automated plant.
