I got in a kayak yesterday for the first time. While i mostly enjoyed it my back didn't at all. Been reading up on the different canoes and im definitely going to need something that sits up higher and have more room so i can stand up. Any suggestions are welcome and will be fishing mostly valley Creek or the cahaba!

Did the one you sit in have the molded seat or a mesh chair? I’d go with kayak for what you are wanting to do

A kayak with a raised chair-style seat is an absolute must. I can fish out of mine all day without getting stuff. If I spent 10 minutes in one of those with the seat molded into the floor I’d be bed-ridden for 2 days. Get one that is designed for fishing as they’ll be wider and therefore more stable. They’re a dime a dozen on marketplace. You can basically spend as little or as much as you want. You can get a good used car be for $300-400 pretty regularly or you can spend $2-3k for fancy pedal-drive or electric

Even if you get a canoe you will need a good stadium seat or seat backer for leaning back and lower back support.

I have canoe and fishing kayak both with seats and it makes a big difference

As mentioned get one with a good seat! I also perfer a sit on instead of a sit in. I have a Wilderness system that I can sit in all day! Bass pro has upgraded their models and Hobie has some really nice ones!

Thanks. They are priced lower than many others too. So far, the HyDryve has been great.

I am headed to Mary Esther this weekend and I'm heading over to Pensacola to buy a used Pelican Catch 120NXT to keep at my girlfriend's place down there. Plan on using it in the sound and hopefully catch fish. The research I've done, not the fastest or most nimble, but stable enough to stand in if you want. Been looking a while and all I could find was the cheap beginner kayaks, or the $1500 variety. If I like kayak fishing enough I'd love to have a pedal drive.

Deals are out there, you just gotta know what you're looking for and be ready to jump on them. My main kayak is a 3Waters Big Fish 120 I picked up several years ago, gently used, for $500 with a paddle and a few other accessories. It's a freaking battleship - 105# empty - but it's stable enough I can not only stand up in it but I can fly fish standing up.

The biggest problem most people have standing in them is not trusting them. With most fishing kayaks, you'd have to almost intentionally try to flip it. I can put all my weight on the side of mine and not flip it. But when most folks fall out is when it tips a little and they over-compensate the other direction and basically through themselves out. It just takes some getting used to

This one is $425 with a carbon fiber paddle, life jacket, and some other doo dads. I was adamant I wanted a good seat and room to store some gear and essentials and it fits the bill. I think I'm going to enjoy it. Only concern I have is it's long and I have a 3/4 ton short bed. Still is going to stick out the back about 3'. But I won't be transporting it much. Will still be better than hauling my center console down there when I want to fish.
