Folks dont even think about that stuff still being live and dangerous.

There are still huge areas of France red zoned from WWI. The largest is Verdun. Farmers and bomb disposal experts still recover over 50 tons of live munitions annually in a process known as the "Iron Harvest". Bombs are found regularly in Germany.

That's a BIG boom!! We dug up a LOT of various UXO on Guam during the 3 years that I worked there. The biggest was an unexploded naval projectile that was about 8" in diameter and 18" long. Protocol was to call the Navy who would come out and inspect it and if it needed to be blown up, they would call the Air Force UXO team to do it. For that particular projectile that had up dig a hole about 8' deep, they put an explosive charge on it, we backfilled the hole with coral sand and they set it off. Some UXO was allowed to be reburied where it was found.

Folks that hunt on our local military bases would be surprised how much UXO is right next to them.

When we were doing maneuvers and live fire exercises in 29 Palms, we were instructed not to even cast a shadow on any old unexploded ordinance we encountered out in the field. That was probably Marine bullshit designed to keep us from trying to take "souvenirs," but it worked. I haven't been blowed up once. Unless you count that time that my cousin Stevie talked me into holding a firecracker in my hand and letting it go off. My hand throbbed for days after that one.

I had a Soldier pick up an unexploded parachute flare that end up going off in his hand and getting a nasty burn - didn't tell me about it till a couple days later bc he didn't want to get in trouble lol.

DO NOT MESS WITH THE UXO - every dumb rule in the military is there bc someone got hurt lol. Still sometimes Soldiers have to FAFO smile

RSA has lots of it and some areas fenced to be off limits to everybody. The TVA Reservation in Muscle Shoals has a few areas of white phosphorous buried. When I worked there it was just roped off with 'Keep Out' tape like a crime scene. That stuff ignites very easily and has to burn itself out.

When I was stationed on Okinawa for 18 months back in the mid '70's, when doing construction the japs would come across one. They would shut down several blocks and call our military to defuse it.

I dug up a lot of belted ammunition at the airport in Brooksville Fla. The airport manager came out while I was on the backhoe digging and I told him about it. He said “we dug up a 500lb bomb last year, you’d never believe how we found it.” I said let me guess, a guy on a backhoe blew up.

Fort Benning had different boundaries during WWII up until the first part of the Vietnam war. There is a lot of UXO around the current perimeter.
Folks dont know about the buried WWI chemical weapons in downtown Mobile and whats been dumped in the bay.

I lived on okinawa in the mid-seventies, my dad was in the AF. I was at school on naha ab & an okinawan consruction was digging with a trackhoe just outside the back base entrance. They dug into & unexploded bomb & it went off & killed the operator as well as some others nearby. Tyler school was not far from there & i was there. Never experienced such a shock wave in my life. There were also okinawan kids around that were missing hands or arms & legs, because they picked up ordnance( mostly old grenades) that exploded. Hard to figure how things like that don't explode when first used, but lay there for years & then all of a sudden go off when touched. It was pounded in our heads when we arrived there not to touch anything we saw that we weren't sure of. Some army guys came around to base schools from time to time warning kids about that stuff.

Have a friend who is a contract diver. He has been finding UXO underwater for 15 years now. He makes a great living and it won’t stop anytime soon. He is currently in Alaska. He spent all last year in Hawaii. Sounds cool but he works his tail off and doesn’t really get to enjoy a whole lot while he is in these places
