There are a few in the 100ac cutover behind our house. Seems like there’s a lonely one that stays right around us, most of the time. Loud little birds, allllll night long!

I don't guess I have heard them called that until now. They're Whippoorwills around here and have been very vocal this year.
A while back a guy at work was talking about the John's Quills in his mother's yard and how tickled she was with them. I had to look that one up. If you're from North Alabama your grandma probably called them Butter Cups.

If you're from North Alabama your grandma probably called them Butter Cups. Whippoorwill and Chuck wills widow are actually two different birds, look similar and have very similar (bust still slightly different calls)

I have one at the house that comes around every so often. Love their call.

Their calls are similar, but the start-up is distinctly different once you hear them back to back. We have Whipper Wills in the Delta that I’ve heard most of my life. Now it’s Chuck Wills in the hills across the state.

I'll be dang! just looked up their sounds on YouTube. Chuck wills are what I've been hearing this whole dang time. My ex-wife was right yet again, I don't know everything. Thanks, Aldeer, now this is what I come here for.

OK. Consider me schooled. I didn't know either until about a year ago I recorded one on the Merlin app and it said Chucks Will Widow. I had never heard of it before and it's definitely what I have always called a Whipporwill. According to some bird guys that were on Gamekeepers last week, Whippoorwills are typically found north of Alabama. He said most of what we are hearing in the deep south is most likely the Wills Widow

I was today years old when I learned that I’ve been hearing a chuck wills widow call and thinking it was a whipoorwill.

He said most of what we are hearing in the deep south is most likely the Wills Widow That’s correct. On occasion I’ll hear an actual whip-poor-will, but I’d say 90%+ are Chuck-wills-widows. Almost everybody calls them whip-poor-wills, but they are not. Their song is very different from the WPW.
