TG was a major league person as well. Used video after every AB to make adjustments and just a student of the game. In 1996&2001 he had 13 strikeouts for the season...

Modern baseball, I give Ted Williams #1. Won 2 batting titles, went to WWII, came back won 2 batting titles , went to Korea, came back won 2 batting titles. Couple of triple crowns. Lost 4 seasons to military in his prime. .406 one year, lifetime .344 (I think) 521 HRs. When asked about a young Mickey Mantle he said " if I could run like that SOB, I'd hit .400 every year."

I am a huge Braves fan, but my two favorite players of all time were Tony Gwynn and Nolan Ryan. Gwynn put the ball in play every single at bat.

What years are considered modern baseball? Some consider it 1901 forward , some 1920 forward. By 1920 all teams had stadiums / parks with outfield fences. A couple still in use in MLB , Wrigley and Fenway, both built around 1915. Rickwood is the oldest , of all used by Negro Leagues and Birmingham's minor league . They still play at least one game a year there to keep it active. Had a MLB game there last year .

When discussing the science of pitching, the professor was giving details about it and said, paraphrasing, "By doing this you could get anybody out, except that &$%#in Tony Gwynn. He could hit anything".
For those that don't know who The Professor is, he is Greg Maddox. Probably the best pure pitcher of the modern era.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

It seems weird to call 1901 or 1920 modern baseball to me. By 1920 a lot of changes had happen in baseball, all teams had fields with fences , the "dead ball era" ended , lot of rules were adopted and a feller named George Herman " Babe" Ruth came along and changed the game forever.

I guess the rules haven’t changed a whole lot, but the way the game is played has definitely changed a lot. And like you said, that’s due to the players changing. It’s unreal how much bigger faster stronger players are nowadays than from even 50 years ago.
