With good rain coming later in the week, I'd really like to get my vetch plots planted. Problem is, I don't have access to my tractor right now.
What are your thoughts on broadcasting directly into a standing but dying clover field without mowing at planting time? Maybe come back and mow the competition down in a week or two, if even necessary. The clover field is pretty clean and the April drought really kicked senescence into gear.
I can always wait a couple weeks and do it the right way, just impatient and rain is never guaranteed.
Thoughts?

I broadcast mine with my 4 wheeler spreader. I would drag with a pine or cedar top after broadcasting and then leave it alone. It takes a long time for it to get going, but once it does, it's impressive growth.

I broadcast mine with my 4 wheeler spreader. I would drag with a pine or cedar top after broadcasting and then leave it alone. It takes a long time for it to get going, but once it does, it's impressive growth. That is what I'm considering doing as well. I had planned to broadcast and then mow some thatch down over it, but I won't have my tractor for a couple more weeks and would love to get it spread this week ahead of the rain, if it materializes. I think I'm going to give it shot.

Only one place I know of that carries it here and it’s hot or miss and you’ve got to by the 50# bag which is WAY more than I need.

WMS has some small bags of vetch, Alyce clover and buck wheat. Summer Spot maybe ?

Mossy Oak Biologic is selling it this year. It's definitely expensive, $300 for a 40lb bag. However, that plants 2 acres and they say a couple acres of vetch can feed a ton of deer. Gamekeeper podcast had a good episode about it a week or so ago.
I got mine from Hancock a couple months back. I'm slinging it tomorrow into standing clover and I'll probably run a drag over it to try to terminate some of the clover.
My plots are a little droughty though, so I'm really not expecting much.

That $300 will go a whole lot further spent on vetch, than on $300 of protein feed.

I bought 20# of joint vetch from biologic also. I double checked Hancock and they said “sold out” but I looked a couple days after and they said they had small quantities just sold out of 50# sacks so I don’t know. The 20# was about $185 shipped I think. I had the wife swing by G&D farms when she went to see her horses and grab 5# of Alyce clover. I’m in camp now and planting in the morning ahead of this next rain.

I got mine spread today ahead of this rain. I ran my drag tines down to scratch the soil. Spread and then drug tines up to get seed to soil contact. It was a decent looking seed bed. Time will tell.

What variety clover is that you're planting into? its a mix of crimson, balansa, berseem, arrowleaf and red. There is still a little forage in there they can munch on until the vetch gets going.
